Ojai Valley Inn

An artsy SoCal oasis
VERIFIED LUXURY

About 90 minutes northwest of Los Angeles, Ojai Valley Inn has welcomed notables like Judy Garland and Walt Disney for nearly a century.

Set on 220 acres of verdant rolling hills that border Los Padres National Forest, the Spanish Colonial-style resort celebrates its famous guests and its everyday ones. It doesn’t matter if you’ve come to relax with art classes, four pools and a sprawling spa, or plan on being active at an expansive tennis center, on a championship-caliber golf course or with complimentary bike rentals, you’ll find your bliss here.

With six onsite eateries (including a coffee shop and bar), it’s tempting to stay put, but the inn’s locale just outside of Ojai makes strolling into town to explore quaint galleries and unique gift shops so easy — if you can tear yourself away from the gorgeous mountain views.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • With an array of trees (Italian olive and citrus), fragrant herbs and roses that pop against the white- and terra-cotta-colored, Spanish-style buildings, Ojai Valley Inn’s grounds are stunning. Simply walking to the café in the morning for a cup of coffee is a Zen experience.
  • Revered as a spiritual destination for centuries by the local Chumash tribe, the lush valley is said to have mystical properties. Spa Ojai channels this “energy vortex” by offering unique treatments like sound energy therapy and chakra readings with a local healer.
  • The Ojai hotel offers diverse activities. Learn how to beekeep at the resort’s apiary, take a one-on-one surf lesson with a pro and then mix up your own scent at a vibrational aromatherapy class — all before dinner.
  • When it was designed in 1923, the hotel’s golf course was known as an architectural marvel and it still holds this prestige today. The greens are tough enough for a professional — seven Senior PGA Tour events have been hosted here — yet approachable for the weekend golfer.
  • From The Oak’s Sunday bluegrass brunch to the refined California cuisine with Italian flair at Olivella, Ojai Valley Inn’s restaurants are some of the best in the area.

Things to Know

  • Parking lots are not near the rooms. If you have a lot of luggage or need assistance, make sure to request a golf cart upon check-in.
  • The Farmhouse at Ojai debuted in March 2019. This 30,000-square-foot, indoor/outdoor events facility consists of a wine library, show kitchen, 8,500-square-foot barn-inspired ballroom and a 10,000-square-foot lawn, and plays hosts to more than 100 culinary activities (from tastings to cooking classes) throughout the year.
  • The Kuyam Experience — a Native American-inspired treatment in a striking, hammam-style tiled room — utilizes a heated mud detox and guided meditation. It’s one of the most popular services at Spa Ojai.
  • In the evening, one of the most Instagram-worthy photo opportunities is at the resort’s 200-year-old oak tree. Here, 28 Spanish Revival-style lanterns by light designer Paul Ferrante illuminate the proud branches.

The Rooms

  • Because the luxury hotel is updated often, the rooms always have a fresh, modern feel while staying true to the property’s Spanish Colonial vibe. A serene Mediterranean color palette of white, blue and beige create a calming effect.
  • Stylish bathrooms feature Baltic silver marble, dual vanities, separate showers and soaking tubs stocked with Spa Ojai amenities. Moorish-inspired patterns or hand-painted tiles lend a sense of place to the spa-like spaces.
  • For an extra romantic getaway, book one of the Ojai resort’s Fireplace Shangri-La rooms, equipped with a cozy seating area next to your roaring fire and a furnished terrace so you can soak up those heavenly views the right way.
  • Ideal for a family reunion, girls’ getaway or destination wedding, Casa Elar, a five-bedroom Tuscan-style private villa, is the epitome of exclusive luxury. Located on an acre of impeccable landscaping, the residence comes with its own staff, two master suites, a chef’s kitchen, 12 limestone fireplaces, a private jacuzzi and sparkling pool.

For the Kids

  • As one of the most kid-friendly resorts in Southern California, Ojai Valley Inn is home to plenty of open space to play. There’s also Camp Oak, a place where young guests between four and 12 can find day and night interactive fun, outdoor activities and arts and crafts — a gratis half-day session is included in your stay.
  • Seasonal family excitement is always on tap here. Activities like customized treasure hunts, dive-in movies, s’mores roasting and holiday-themed surprises fill the year-round agenda.
  • Of the four pools at the resort, the family-friendly Pixie Pool offers the most fun in the sun. Private cabanas provide a respite from those unrelenting rays, and a menu of refreshing California treats (complete with cocktails for parents and milkshakes for kids) ensures everyone stays satisfied.
