Cliff House Maine

A tranquil cliffside retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY

Situated on 70 acres atop majestic Bald Head Cliff, Cliff House Maine offers a dreamy, cozy respite overlooking the Atlantic.

Opened in 1872 as a hotel and farm, the peaceful retreat has attracted some of New England’s top brass to its impressive shores.

Today, the property is as popular as ever, drawing well-heeled crowds of road-trippers and jet setters alike. A recent renovation has given this historic hotel new life, but it still makes the most of its spectacular location — each of the 226 accommodations boasts balconies that open up to an ocean view that continues farther than the eye can see. And completing the scenery is a golf course next door.

Since it wouldn’t be a trip to New England without authentic seafood, Cliff House Maine hosts two restaurants that serve a variety of locally sourced ingredients to capture the essence of traditional Maine cuisine. A new spa and wellness center adds a touch of 21st-century luxury without distracting from the property’s timeless charm.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Cliff House Maine is a four-season destination. Spend winters curled up by one of the many wood-burning fireplaces or in the outdoor hot tub. Warmer weather provides plenty of opportunities to swim in the ocean-facing salt water pools and dig into fresh lobster at Nubb’s.
  • A prime clifftop location gives the hotel mesmerizing ocean views. Watch the waves crash on the craggy rocks from the restaurant, lounge, lobby or your own room.
  • The Spa at Cliff House is a sanctuary in itself, bringing nature inside with high-quality botanical products and a variety of locally inspired head-to-toe treatments. The floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean add another element of relaxation.
  • Opened in summer 2018, the Weare Cottage is a one-of-a-kind accommodation at the seaside retreat. Built upon the foundations of the Weare family (founders and owners of the resort until 2015) home, the idyllic space features the house’s original stone fireplace, ideal for s’mores roasting and cider-sipping with your whole crew.
  • Don’t miss brunch at the Maine resort’s restaurant The Tiller. Highlights like lobster poutine and crab Benedict inject a savory local flavor to the comforting menu.

Things to Know

  • Hear live music nightly in the lounge just outside of The Tiller restaurant.
  • There is no access to the beach from Cliff House Maine, but you can venture down the cliffs and put your toes in the ocean. The neighboring town of Ogunquit has plenty of sand and sea, just be sure get to the beach early to find parking.
  • Tesla owners can recharge while their cars do the same. The luxury hotel offers complimentary valet charging and parking for the electric vehicles.
  • S’more kits are sold in the reception area to use around the outdoor fire pits.
  • Don’t worry about running out of coffee. Each floor is equipped with a beverage station featuring a Keurig and a variety of K-Cups. A mini-fridge houses milk from a local farm.

The Rooms

  • The resort’s 226 rooms and suites feature maritime decor with a modern slant. A sea-themed color palette (navy, robin blue, ecru and white) lends a homey touch while staying true to the coastal theme.
  • Almost all accommodations come with ocean views, but only premium rooms and suites have fireplaces.
  • Each of the 40 suites has its own personality. Book a Sleepaway Bunk Suite if you’re traveling with kids, or opt for the Captain Perkins Suite or Elsie Weare Suite to have multiple sea-facing terraces.
  • For a private stay, check into the Weare Cottage. This three-bedroom hideaway is decked out in the resort’s signature nautical style but with the bonus of a full front porch that’s great for sipping sundowners or stargazing.

The Restaurants

  • The Tiller is an upscale (but kid-friendly) dining option, serving seafood-focused fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Start your day with lobster hash and Maine new potatoes or visit in the evening for wood-roasted oysters and pan-seared skate wing with lemon-caper sauce.
  • While seafood is certainly the star at The Tiller, land-based dishes like hanger steak with Brandbury Mountain blue cheese butter or a mushroom-packed plate of gnocchi shine bright, too.
  • Nubb’s Lobster Shack provides a taste of quintessential Maine cuisine. Order up a few hearty lobster rolls (burgers and other fresh fish are available, too) to enjoy inside the restaurant, at the tables just outside or in one of the plentiful Adirondack chairs around the property.
  • A newer addition to the resort’s lineup, Bald Head Coffee Co. serves fresh, local brews and treats until late afternoon each day.
