One&Only Nyungwe House

A retreat for nature lovers
VERIFIED LUXURY

One&Only Nyungwe House stands out immediately for its location — the intimate 22-room property is set within a working tea plantation steps from Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest and largest forests in Africa. Nature lovers will quickly feel at home surrounded by the rainforest and nestled in the mountainous region.

Fortunately, the rustic setting does not require scrimping on luxuries. Each suite boasts an open fireplace, terrace and large soaking tub for post-trek recovery, and the onsite spa specializes in African-inspired treatments, accented with ethical and chemical-free Africology skincare products.

The property’s main building, the homestead, plays host to your all-inclusive meals and drinks. There, the chef circulates each evening to chat with guests (and provide copies of any recipes you request). A highlight: staff will surprise you by arranging one of your meals at the unique private table on the grounds set among the tea leaves.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • One&Only Nyungwe House sits on a tea plantation, and the lush green tea plants dominate the grounds. Take part in a daily tea ceremony, or learn the art of picking leaves and brewing the perfect cup during your stay.
  • The Rwanda resort is 30 minutes from Nyungwe National Park. It’s one of three national parks among the oldest rainforests in Africa, and the launching point for chimpanzee treks and canopy walks.
  • While the majority of guests come to the property for the chimpanzee trekking, you don’t need to leave the grounds to see monkeys. Expect to find the agile primates dangling from your balcony, hiding among the tea plants and spying on you while you dine.
  • With just 22 rooms you can expect beyond bespoke service — the chef designs multi-course meals for each table based on guest preferences, and the staff takes note of popular minibar snacks and doubly restocks favorites.
  • Be sure to take advantage of the luxury resort’s extensive array of complimentary onsite experiences, which range from spear throwing and archery to stargazing and learning the secrets of African tea.

Things to Know

  • One&Only Nyungwe House is a five-hour drive from Kigali and six hours from sister property One&Only Gorilla’s Nest. Alternatively, take a helicopter between properties and to the capital via the hotel’s own helipad in just 35 minutes or book one of the daily RwandAir flights from Kigali to Kamembe Airport.
  • Chimpanzee treks require a permit that can be purchased from the African Parks organization by emailing nyungwe@africanparks.org. Permits can only be arranged through the African Parks or licensed tour operators, not the hotel. Guests must be a minimum of 15 years old to trek.
  • Creativity is the name of the game at the Tea Lounge Bar, where mixologists rely on local herbs from the onsite garden and house-created tea infusions to make one-of-a-kind cocktails tailored to guests’ favorite flavors.
  • Trekkers will be supplied with a rucksack, logoed baseball cap, sunscreen, insect repellent and complimentary laundry service for your gear — all you need to bring is your chimp-spotting abilities and a pair of sturdy shoes.
  • The same troupe of local dancers that greets arriving guests also makes an appearance at happy hour, encouraging you to try your hands (and hips) at traditional moves.
