The Grand America Hotel

Old World opulence in Salt Lake City
Travelers may come for northern Utah’s breathtaking grand peaks (visible from downtown Salt Lake City), but equally remarkable is the towering presence of the 24-story Grand America Hotel. The massive white-stone building is a landmark in downtown Salt Lake City, punctuating the urban skyline while reflecting the dusky purple high desert sunsets from the windows of its 775 rooms.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The hotel is famous for its Sunday brunch service in the aptly named Garden Café. Seven stations craft everything from sizzling crepes (with fillings of your choice) and omelets to paella and carved meat right before your eyes.
  • Business travelers and family vacationers both value The Grand America for its array of amenities, the former utilizing the 77,000 square feet of conference space, complimentary Wi-Fi and concierge service to guide them to the city’s best local restaurants — which are all within walking distance of the hotel.
  • The dark wood interior of the Gibson Lounge, meanwhile, is a favorite among professionals looking to unwind during happy hour, though to experience the neighborhood’s nightlife, allow the concierge to direct you to the numerous bars highlighting the talents of Salt Lake City’s burgeoning craft cocktail scene.
Things to Know
  • Family vacationers can travel lighter with in-room crib delivery, lobby pastry shop, family-friendly pool, and kitchen suite options in guest rooms.
  • The Grand America Hotel’s afternoon tea service (with 1 and 3:30 p.m. seatings daily) maintains the very civilized ritual of high tea with an abundant menu of delicate savory sandwiches, bite-size pastries (petits fours, tartlets) and loose-leaf tea brewed in porcelain pots and poured into proper cups and saucers.
  • The Grand America Hotel does not charge any daily resort fees. However, there are fees for parking and for use of the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Grand Spa facilities. Daily self-parking in the secure underground garage is $18 a night; valet parking is $29 a night.
The Rooms
  • There are 379 Premier Rooms at the luxury Salt Lake City hotel, sized at a generous 700 square feet, available with either a king-size bed or two queen-size beds.
  • The rooms are likely larger than many big-city apartments, but we expect no less from a hotel that defines itself as “grand.”
  • Most of the rooms at this Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel include a step-out balcony with views of the nearby Wasatch or Oquirrh mountain ranges, the city skyline or the hotel’s courtyard.
