Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The hotel already has quite a history: built by the son of U.S. President Ulysses Grant, the hotel debuted in 1910. Known for luxurious amenities, it soon became a magnet for politicians, high-ranking military officials, dignitaries and celebrities.
  • The best times to hit the lounge are when live entertainment fills the room with music and when happy hour is in full swing — it becomes a hot spot for locals and visitors alike.
  • History buffs will appreciate the property's complimentary tours, offered every Saturday for hotel guests.
  • The two Presidential Bi-Level suites on the 10th floor were originally part of the hotel's celebrated Grand Ballroom. These ultra-chic suites supply 1,300 square feet of opulent living space spread over two floors.
Things to Know
  • During Prohibition, the San Diego hotel ran a popular speakeasy complete with live jazz and booze secreted via underground tunnels.
  • Not surprisingly, the hotel has played host to 15 presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to George H.W. Bush.
  • Book a personal trainer to work out in your room, outside or the lower-level fitness center.
The Rooms
  • While each room is unique, all have high ceilings, crown molding and regal empire-style furnishings.
  • Pillow-top beds are dressed in 300-thread-count Italian linens and backed by original drip-painting headboards.
  • Guests who prefer spacious surroundings will want to book a well-appointed Signature Suite. Each features added luxuries such as a 10-foot-by-10-foot walk-in marble shower with six shower heads.
  • For the very top-of-the-line experience, you’ll want to book the 11th-floor Penthouse Suite. It originally served as The US Grant’s radio station and is the prevailing choice among celebrities and A-listers today.
The Restaurants
  • When it comes to grabbing a bite, head to The Grant Grill. Located off the lobby and fronting Fourth Avenue, this culinary enclave has been the hub of power lunches and sumptuous gastronomy since its 1951 inception.
  • Classic offerings such as the sherry-rich mock turtle soup still grace the menu and mingle with contemporary California cuisine prepared with items harvested from the luxury hotel’s own rooftop garden.
  • For those seeking libations, the adjacent Grant Grill Lounge offers signature sips, including its own Cocktails Sur Lie — an effervescent line of bottle-conditioned cocktails such as the Mule.
  • Recently opened in 2018, French-inspired cocktail bar Rendezvous specializes in tableside tipples, punch bowls and sparkling sips.
