San Francisco Proper Hotel

Eclectic urban cool in South of Market
VERIFIED LUXURY

At the flagship property of the Proper brand, San Francisco Proper Hotel showcases celebrity interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s sophisticated and glamorous style. Located in the city's heart, the hotel resides in a historic flatiron building that dates back to 1904. Its Old World charm is juxtaposed with sleek modern accents.

Wearstler likes to imagine that a particular person owns each hotel; in the case of the San Francisco outpost, it’s Gilda, a great aunt who’s spent her entire life traveling the globe — resulting in an unusual, layered collection of art and furniture. This aesthetic is seen throughout the hotel, especially in the cozy and inviting lobby. This collected coolness is also found in the hotel’s 131 guest rooms — no two are alike — and three dining destinations, Villon, an upscale restaurant serving seasonal California cuisine; La Bande, a Spanish tapas eatery; and Charmaine’s, a sexy rooftop bar.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The lobby is a beautiful meeting space or simply a place to while away an afternoon. There are plenty of comfortable and welcoming seating vignettes — a vintage European velvet couch here, a modern checkered armchair there — original marble flooring, exotic rugs and eye-catching artwork. Wearstler mixes old and new pieces by local artists with cubist paintings, graphic prints and unique mirrors.
  • There are six different room types, ranging from a Deluxe Queen to a Premier Suite, but one of the most unusual options is the Bunk Room, a handsomely appointed lodging with two walnut bunk beds. Speaking of the beds, all of the mattresses are handmade in California and covered in Fili D’oro Italian linens. Walk-in showers feature Aesop bath products, while the minibars are stocked with locally sourced food and snacks made in-house at the hotel’s dining establishments.
  • This is a place for design lovers. Pattern and print play heavily into the SF Proper. Intricately designed rugs, striped bed coverings and custom floral wallpaper are found in most rooms. For the best accommodations, book a Premier Suite. On the point of the flatiron-shaped building on each of the seven floors, it includes a cute lounge area and a dining table.
  • La Bande, the Spanish restaurant on the hotel’s ground floor, merits a visit to see Wearstler’s take on a classic tapas bar. The walls and floors are covered in sleek emerald-green tiles, and the bar is a giant marble slab upon which you’ll find a ham leg waiting to be carved. Snack on delicious tomato toast, melt-in-your-mouth salt cod croquettes and housemade charcuterie.
  • Scheduling time to enjoy Charmaine’s, the rooftop bar, is necessary. Wearstler imagined that Gilda, the aforementioned imaginary owner of the luxury hotel, has a cat named Charmaine. This cat likes to watch the happenings of the bustling neighborhood from the roof. You can do the same at the indoor-outdoor bar that boasts some of the best views in the city. Grab a spritz and the pretzel rolls with smoked pimento cheese, then relax by the fire pit.
