Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende

A sanctuary for design and art lovers
VERIFIED LUXURY

As one of the only new-build hotels in San Miguel del Allende (one of Mexico’s most popular expat destinations), Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende melds Old World colonial charm and modernity brilliantly. Designed by Mexico City’s trendsetting AoMa Estudio to the tune of $35 million, the chic hotel is the fifth property of Grupo Posadas’ Live Aqua brand.

The largest hotel in town, Live Aqua brought many other firsts to its UNESCO World Heritage Site home when it opened in 2018. Among the property’s array of luxury amenities are three offerings you probably won’t find anywhere else in the city: an Asian street food eatery; a Casa Dragones tequila and cigar lounge; and a fine-dining restaurant by Mexican celebrity chef Eduardo Palazuelos.

Indeed, San Miguel de Allende is an enchanting place, however, Live Aqua Urban Resort is a destination unto itself with its colonial-meets-avant-garde décor, modern art throughout, culinary diversity and generous outdoor spaces to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Although flanked by nature and the historic Presa del Obraje dam, Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende is only four blocks from the town’s main attraction: Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel or, as locals call the church, the pink wedding cake.
  • Who doesn’t love the aroma of fresh baked bread? Luckily, that will be one of your first experiences upon arrival. The wafting scent comes from the property’s panadería (bakery) at the entrance before check-in.
  • The luxury hotel’s style — featuring natural elements such as slate, rattan and oak accented by pops of whimsical color in furnishings and fabrics — is simply stunning.
  • Impressive, larger-than-life sculptures by Mexican artists dot the property. Highlights include Javier Marin’s Cabeza Vainilla and Rodrigo Garagarza’s Matatena Gigante.
  • Feel Urban Spa by Live Aqua is a sensorial wonderland. Non-guests who book a treatment have access to its hammock-outfitted outdoor pool for the day.

Things to Know

  • For the best desert views, including the Presa del Obraje dam built more than a century ago, request a pool-facing suite.
  • Ideal for a wedding or corporate event, Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende has the largest ballroom in the state of Guanajuato.
  • For kids, there’s a playroom and activities like yoga and painting, but the family favorite is movie night on the hotel’s terrace. Ask the concierge to arrange it.
  • La Caty 555, the art hotel’s boutique, has a well-curated selection of upscale Mexican handicrafts, including clothing and home décor.

The Rooms

  • Rooms showcase monastic luxury in line with the hotel’s minimalism vibe — clean lines, crisp whites and soothing wood accents, such as exposed beams overhead, headboards and plank flooring. Details like vintage luggage, local black-and-white photography and eye-catching bathroom tile make it feel fresh and now.
  • Live Aqua brand signature room details include high-thread-count sheets, feather mattresses, glass-walled bathrooms and large soaking tubs.
  • We love the unique room amenities, including the record player with LPs from Mozart to Madonna to spin, and bespoke aromatherapy kits in scents like citrus, lavender or the Zen blend (eucalyptus and mint).
  • Bathrooms come stocked with Molton Brown toiletries and plush robes.
  • Some accommodations have spacious terraces with dam views and a toasty Jacuzzi.

The Restaurants

  • Zibu, the hotel’s restaurant by local celebrity chef Eduardo Palazuelos, serves elevated global cuisine with emphasis on Mexican and Asian flavors and ingredients. Standout dishes include grilled octopus with a spicy chile-garlic-miso sauce, sweet-and-sour shrimp lollipops, and soft-shell crab tacos.
  • On the second floor is Spice Market, a casual but stylish eatery with a Southeast Asian street-food-inspired menu, including dishes like Korean chili-glazed chicken wings, steamed pork belly buns and Thai vegetable green curry.
  • For an incredible sundowner, head to the bar on the patio for wonderful views of the historic dam and ancient cacti.
  • Another room with a vista is the Casa Dragones-themed cigar bar. Here, you can choose from a menu of fine wines and rare spirits, but naturally, the star sipper is a glass of Casa Dragones tequila.
  • Grab a pastry at the bakery and a cappuccino at the hotel’s coffee bar for great start to the day at the San Miguel de Allende hotel.
