Rosewood Miramar Beach

Oceanside glamour in Montecito
VERIFIED LUXURY

Home to megawatt celebrities like Oprah and Ellen, Montecito, California, has a new star in town. Opened in March 2019 on the former grounds of Miramar By The Sea Hotel, Rosewood Miramar Beach is turning heads as one of California’s only luxury oceanfront resorts with rooms directly on the sand.

Owned by legendary developer Rick Caruso (builder of L.A.’s upscale The Grove shopping center), the hotel feels more like a regal family estate. A manor-style home serves as the heart of the property, with private bungalows for rooms and posh “backyard” amenities, like a grand lawn, English-garden-style landscaping, a bocce ball court, giant hammocks and a fire pit.

The coastal-chic design combines approachable and playful features (pink open-air Jolly cars shuttle guests around the 16-acre resort) with opulent touches (such as the sweeping spiral staircase in the lobby). The new-build hotel’s rooms, furnishings and grounds are pristine. It feels like you’ve been given special access to experience the property before it’s even opened.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • True beachfront hotels are rare in California, and the hotel’s location directly on Miramar Beach is an incredible amenity for all ages. Take advantage of your coveted locale by renting sea kayaks with the kids or lifting a glass with colleagues at the seaside bar.
  • Our favorite rooms, especially for a romantic stay, are waterfront — specifically the Beach House suites with ocean-facing beds, fireplaces and expansive balconies.
  • Dining is a highlight. Don't miss Caruso’s Southern Italian fine-dining cuisine.
  • Everyone is a pampered guest at Rosewood Miramar Beach. There are luxury welcome amenities, gourmet menus and activities for each type of beloved family member, be it a child or pooch.
  • Treat yourself to a service at Sense, A Rosewood Spa, at Miramar Beach. Featuring indigenous ingredients like wild sage and prickly pear, unique treatments such as the Calming Wild Ginger Tradition provide the ultimate in seaside rejuvenation.

Things to Know

  • When you’re checking in, don’t look for a front desk. Instead, turn to your right and enter a plush room with individual desks where a personal attendant awaits.
  • Trains, both commercial and passenger, run day and night through the edge of the property. While it can be noisy (even at the beach), the rooms are sound-proofed to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.
  • Those searching for premium retail therapy will be pleasantly surprised. At Rosewood Miramar Beach, you’ll find the first hotel retail shop for goop (Gwyneth Paltrow’s health brand) and a James Perse concept store.
  • Art and photography lovers, rejoice. There are more than 600 pieces on display throughout the luxury hotel, all hand-selected by owner Rick Caruso, including works by Slim Aarons, Normal Rockwell and Hans Burkhardt.
  • To nab a prime table at Caruso’s — the Santa Barbara hotel’s fine-dining Italian restaurant overlooking the ocean — make sure to book your reservation at least one to two weeks in advance, especially if you want to watch the sunset.

The Rooms

  • Spread across 16 acres, the 158 guest rooms and suites are a retreat, no matter the occasion. Connecting bungalows are great for families, signature suites provide a romantic escape and beachfront rooms deliver serenity.
  • The décor is modern California coastal: crisp white and gold details with splashes of color from lavender to periwinkle and pops of whimsy, such as chevron rugs.
  • Our favorite amenities available in every room are the expansive tub, exclusive Miramar Beach toiletries, Nespresso coffee maker, stellar coffee table art books and the terrace or balcony.

The Restaurants

  • Named after the hotel’s owner, Caruso’s is Rosewood Miramar’s fine-dining restaurant overlooking the ocean. The vibe emulates a swanky retro supper club and the menu is mostly Italian fare with a Santa Barbara twist.
  • Cocktail menus are unique to each bar or restaurant on the property. For example, expect classic tipples at the sophisticated Manor Bar and refreshing, citrus-based sips at Miramar Beach Bar.
  • Located next to the Manor Pool, Scoop Shop serves up nostalgic summertime fare, such as gourmet burgers and ice cream sundaes. Relax poolside and have your sweet treat delivered directly to your lounger.
  • The Revere Room spotlights local ingredients from nearby farms and purveyors for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
