Hotel Bellwether

A welcoming waterfront hotel
Sponsored page. This property is not Star Rated.
At this northern Washington hotel, located in the city of Bellingham near the Canadian border, the draw is without question the views. From the spacious waterfront deck, you'll be able to look across the quaint shore of Bellingham Bay to the glaciers of Mount Baker in the Cascade Mountains. Arrive by boat (or sea plane from the nearby San Juan islands), and you can dock at the hotel's 220-foot center-pile dock.

Inside the hotel, you'll find comfortable rooms outfitted in neutral tones and substanial dark wood furnishings. The property includes a full-service spa and the popular onsite restaurant, the Lighthouse Bar & Grill, which serves (of course) a seafood-heavy menu.

For those seeking outdoor adventures, the hotel is conveniently located near a slew of outstanding hikes in the North Cascades, as well as the Mount Baker ski area. On site, explore the walking and jogging trail, which connects to miles of Bellingham’s seaside paved pathways.
Our Inspector's Highlights
• Hotel Bellwether is designed to have the look and feel of a historic hotel on the East Coast. Exterior architecture smacks of Cape Cod, with gray and white color scheme and gabled roof.

• The adjacent lighthouse, though a replica of a working lighthouse, lends more of the historic New England atmosphere.

• Hotel Bellwether is perched on the waterfront in Bellingham, Washington, overlooking Bellingham Bay. Just steps away sit the stores, salons, coffee shops, restaurants and parks of the quaint Bellwether community.

• The hotel is also within a short, 10-minute drive of Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district, with its boutiques, art galleries and restaurants.

• Visitors can take a ferry to the Old English city of Victoria, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, or drive to the international city of Vancouver, about 50 miles north.
Things to Know
• To the east rise the Cascade Mountains, crowned by the glacier-capped Mount Baker, a 10,750-foot volcano that sports world-record snowfalls. Here, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, and other outdoor pursuits keep you busy for days.

• If you’re after snow-bound adventures like skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding, you’ll luck out with a long snow season; Mount Baker Ski Area typically stays open from October to April.

• If you’re planning to come this way for hiking, mountain biking and whitewater rafting, you should schedule your visit for late July to early September — the months when mountain trails are largely free of snow.
The Rooms
• Guest rooms are outfitted with imported Italian furniture and mahogany doors. Larger rooms come with a natural gas fireplace and private patio or balcony.

• Each room, regardless of size, features complimentary wireless and wired high speed internet, oversized pillows and satin linens.

• Bathrooms, with a jetted bathtub, marble and granite counter tops and cotton bathrobes, are also stocked with Gilchrist & Soams body products.

• Rooms boast views of the evergreen-studded San Juan Islands, glistening Bellingham Bay or the bustling shops and restaurants of Bellwether Plaza.

• Guests can also opt to stay in the property’s freestanding replica lighthouse, which is divided into two main floors and a top-deck observation area.
The Restaurants
• Hotel Bellwether’s Lighthouse Bar & Grill enjoys an excellent reputation among Bellingham’s diners.

• The restaurant overlooks the water and specializes in Northwest specialties for three meals a day.

• Menu items include smoked salmon, steamed clams and Pacific oysters on the half shell. Many of the ingredients are sourced from local farmers, fishers and ranchers.

• Chefs can accommodate food allergies and sensitivities as requested. The grill also hosts two happy hours daily, from 3 to 6 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to close from Monday through Saturday.

• On Sundays the restaurant runs an all-day happy hour. Local wines and beers feature heavily on the drink menu.
