Hotel Les Mars

A splash of 18th-century elegance in Wine Country
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tucked away in a bucolic wine country setting in Healdsburg, you’ll discover the exceedingly charming Hotel Les Mars. Located on a side street just off the main strip, the classic chateau-style residence boasts 16 airy rooms overflowing with tasteful antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries. Every one is individually appointed, making them feel warm and a welcome from ubiquitous cookie-cutter-type accommodations.

Once you get past its beautiful limestone façade and step foot inside the lobby, the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel will impress with an attentive staff that stands ready to help you plan your Sonoma adventure.

The hand-carved walnut-panel library offers a tranquil respite after a day of wine tastings, and the delicious complimentary breakfast delivered to your room each morning will make it difficult to heed the call of the nearby wineries.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Sonoma hotel has an Old World feel about it with romantic four-poster beds and antique armoires and a lobby, but white walls, high ceilings and elegant details keep it fresh and light.
  • The hotel sits just a block from quaint Healdsburg’s town square. Stroll over to peruse one-of-a-kind boutiques, art galleries, wine bars and more. One of our favorite stops is next door: Shed is a two-story foodie emporium with a market, a café and an event space.
  • In a nod to true European hospitality, breakfast comes with your stay. During our visit, a tray teeming with fresh fruit, croissants, pastries, yogurt with honey, coffee and tea arrived in the morning. It was a nice way to wake up.
  • A stay in Hotel Les Mars comes with perks. The hotel has special relationships with a number of Sonoma and Napa wineries and can get you complimentary tours and tastings to some top spots.
  • After a long day of vineyard visits, it's nice to regroup in the hotel's easygoing Chalkboard Restaurant. You can chat about the day's adventures over glasses of Sonoma wines and flavorful small plates.
Things to Know

  • Complimentary amenities abound, including valet parking, Wi-Fi and wine and cheese receptions.
  • The luxury hotel has a small gym, but also provides access to a local health club, if you need more facilities.

The Rooms
  • With just 16 rooms spread throughout two floors, the hotel offers unique details individual to each and every room.
  • The third-floor rooms feel more spacious thanks to 20-foot-tall beamed ceilings.
  • Elegant accommodations have canopied four-poster beds made of hand-carved wood and swathed in Italian Versai linens, handcrafted mahogany furniture and cozy gas fireplaces.
  • Most of the white marble bathrooms come outfitted with roomy hydrotherapy tubs and separate shower stalls.
  • For the ultimate indulgence, book the Grand King at Hotel Les Mars. Whether you opt for the second- or third-floor location, you’ll be swaddled in luxury in the 550-square-foot room.
        The Restaurant
        • Chalkboard Restaurant serves seasonal small plates, like seared dayboat scallops with English peas, carrots, melted onion, bacon, vanilla oil and dill, as well as housemade bucatini with pepperoni, fava leaf, Meyer lemon and pecorino.
        • Many ingredients featured in the chef's dishes come from the restaurant’s own 4.5-acre organic garden at nearby Chalk Hill Winery estate. You might find fava beans, asparagus, greens, beets and heirloom tomatoes fresh from the farm on your plate.
        • Chalkboard keeps a relaxed, fun atmosphere. But it still veers upscale with Carrera marble tables, gray wood in the bright, modern dining room. And a stone patio with fire pits provides a cozy alternative.
        • Don't miss pairing these dishes with a flight of local wines.
        • If you want a break from the vino, we suggest the Monkeypod, a tropical tipple made with rum, coconut, tamarind, cacao and lime.
