El Conquistador Tucson, A Hilton Resort

An outdoor enthusiast’s Southwestern oasis
VERIFIED LUXURY
Immerse yourself in nature at El Conquistador Tucson, A Hilton Resort. Set on a saguaro-studded stretch of the Sonoran Desert with dramatic Santa Catalina mountain vistas, this northwest Tucson retreat has offered a winning blend of outdoor activities and upscale amenities since its debut in 1982.

The amount of protected land set aside for the neighboring Catalina State Park has risen to 5,500 acres, while Tucson's growth to the northwest affords you access to some of the city's top shopping and dining.

And a multi-million-dollar renovation, completed in fall 2017, highlights El Conquistador's distinctive Southwest setting while ratcheting up its creature comforts. The renovation touched every facet of the resort, including regrading the pool decks for optimal views, ensuring that every plant on the property is native to Tucson and adding a new salsa and herb garden for the upscale Southwestern cuisine at Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, the resort's fine dining restaurant.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Canter off into the sunset on one of the stable's 18 horses. Go on guided trail rides and take riding lessons.
  • Host to many national and regional USTA tournaments, El Conquistador gives you access to 31 flood-lit tennis courts, the most of any Tucson hotel.
  • Fire and water meet after dark at the oasis-like pool complex, where the dancing flames of fire pits illuminate five pools and a 143-foot-long waterslide.
  • Enjoy a ballet of bright colors at the Hummingbird and Butterfly Garden, with plantings designed to draw the tiny flitting critters.
  • Hotel guests get first dibs on tee times at — and transport to — two nearby 18-hole Troon North golf courses with traditional greens. The challenging nine-hole Pusch Ridge desert course is located on the property.
Things to Know
  • This is a family friendly resort. El Con Kids Club will keep kids ages four to 12 busy in hourly, half-day and full-day sessions.
  • For a taste of the local culture, check out the Native American flute music, performed Tuesday through Saturday in the courtyard. There’s also an onsite gallery highlighting a different Tucson artist each month.
The Rooms
  • The remodeled 428 rooms and suites — including 144 units in the high-end casita village — offer clean-lined furnishings in blue and gold tones enhanced by lots of natural light.
  • The bathrooms feature LED-lit wall mirrors with built-in night lights, gray granite countertops and luxe Peter Thomas Roth toiletries.
  • You'll have stellar views of the mountains, city or desert — or a combination thereof — from the patio or balcony of your room.
  • Upgrade to a Casita or an Acacia suite for separate living and dining rooms, a fireplace and a patio with its own pool and hot tub.
  • The most luxurious of the accommodations is the Presidential Suite. It comes with a master bedroom with a private bath, separate living and dining rooms, a wet bar and a balcony overlooking the pool.
Nearby Attractions
  • Ask about the weekly complimentary guided hike and free two-hour bike rental and then head out to Catalina State Park, which sits in the resort's backyard. Part of the Coronado National Forest, the state park has miles of hiking and biking trails as well as Native American ruins to explore.
  • Complementing the resort's pool complex, the nearby Oro Valley Aquatic Center offers high-diving boards and swimming lessons, and it often hosts national meets and synchronized swimming demos.
  • Now run by the University of Arizona as a scientific research and conference center, Biosphere 2 still draws visitors fascinated by its past as a human experiment in eco-survival.
  • Browse the desert gardens, art galleries and gift shops at Tohono Chul park, but beware: You'll likely want to tuck lots of colorful Mexican folk art and exotic plants into your suitcase.
  • If you need to do some shopping, Tucson Premium Outlets is a short drive north of the luxury hotel. Peruse stores like Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Nike and Godiva Chocolatier.
