San Clemente Palace Kempinski

A secluded sanctuary in Venice
Secluded on a 15-acre private island offering respite away from the hustle and bustle of Venice proper, San Clemente Palace Kempinski is a luxury lover’s dream.

The palatial hotel, which was formerly incarnated as a monastery, uses its imposing historical elegance to great advantage. There’s no such thing as “no frills” here: there’s a garden-adjacent heated swimming pool, top-notch dining with enviable views of the lagoon and lush greenery, a needs-no-introduction spa with signature herbal massages and, of course, a theme of understated opulence embedded in the hotel’s decor.
Our Inspector's Highlights
• The Venice hotel is an extremely versatile property. It’s got running trails, a fitness center, tennis and golf for active types.

• Interlocking suites and a kid’s club make this a family-friendly spot.

• Check out the gorgeous 12th-century church. It’s a charmed setting for a wedding, or even just some photos.

• The Kempinski is a quiet retreat. Its 17 acres are filled with trees, anquite gardens and lush foliage.
Things to Know
• The island of San Clemente is a mere 10 minutes from the hot spots of San Marco, and he hotel offers a complimentary shuttle that leaves every 30 minutes to get you closer to the action.

• The private island isn’t accessible via the vaporetto (public ferry) or other public transportation. If you miss the hotel’s own shuttle, you’ll have to hire a water taxi. Or bring your own boat and moor it at San Clemente Palace’s private dock.

• The luxury hotel opens seasonally, from late March to early November, so plan accordingly.
The Rooms
• The luxe rooms — bedecked with terrazzo floors, rich fabrics and drapes, and the ever-present Murano glass chandeliers — are all plush, but you’ll definitely want to book one with a lagoon view.

• Unlike many cramped Venice hotels, the Kempinski gives you guest rooms with plenty of space to sprawl out.

• The best room is the San Clemente Suite. The most spacious accommodations in the hotel come with a living room, kitchen, two bathrooms and awe-inspiring views of Venice from every room.
The Restaurants
• The excellent eateries at San Clemente Palace Kempinski all feature fresh Italian and Mediterranean cuisine.

• Insieme Restaurant is the go-to breakfast spot.

• For an alfresco lunch or dinner, tuck into seasonal dishes in a parkside setting at La Dolce Restaurant.

• Take in gorgeous views of the lagoon as you dine in the evening at Acquerello.
