Where New England goes for European charm
VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We created the original Five-Star rating system in 1958, when we were Mobil Travel Guide.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.
Soon To Be Rated
As our highly trained, incognito inspectors work to assess properties, our editors check them out ahead of time and provide a sneak preview of what to expect.
Mayflower Inn and Spa, a country inn located less than two hours from New York City, evokes the feeling and elegance of an English countryside hotel.
Set on 58 acres of rolling hills, streams and lush gardens, Mayflower Inn and Spa features guest rooms and suites swathed in luxurious fabrics; four-poster, canopied beds; 18th- and 19th-century art and modern touches like flat-screen TVs. Our Inspector's Highlights
- The finely manicured grounds — featuring stunning specimen trees, beautiful gardens and ponds — are a nature lover's delight.
- With an extensive menu of treatments, workshops and activities, The Spa at Mayflower Inn and Spa will leave you feeling rejuvenated and recharged. We particularly love the spa's Garden Room and indoor pool, which both feature sublime decor and stunning views.
- Charm, romance and antiques fill the luxury hotel, especially the inn's library and parlor, which is the perfect place to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or a good book.
- We love the personalized, friendly service at Mayflower Inn and Spa. The youthful staff tends to your needs, without being cloying or pushy.
- Overall, we love the peace and quiet that can be found at the Mayflower. With only 30 guest rooms and 58 acres, there are plenty of places for serenity and privacy.
Things to Know
- The Connecticut hotel is more of a traditional country inn than a modern resort. So if you're looking to run on a state-of-the-art elliptical machine with an iPad in tow, you may be disappointed here.
- The area is a destination for antiquing, and there are plenty of antiquing tours to take advantage of during your stay.
The Rooms
- The rooms at Mayflower Inn and Spa are all different — each has its own unique style and country charm.
- All the rooms at the luxury hotel are decorated like a luxurious old English country manor, complete with 18th- and 19th-century antiques, plush fabrics, Frette linens and four-poster canopy beds.
- There is a sitting area with a writing desk, a closet and a cabinet, as well as a well-stocked mini bar and a modern flat-screen TV and DVD player. Many rooms feature a gas fireplace, a balcony or, if you're lucky, both.
- You’ll find lovely little touches throughout — from a welcoming white orchid to a dish full of fresh apples to a selection of books.
The Restaurants
- The Mayflower Dining Room, helmed by executive chef Lacey Lou Franklin, serves upscale contemporary American cuisine, incorporating local New England ingredients in every dish.
- The Dining Room features a unique offering for oenophiles: a selection of Coravin wines. The Coravin is a tool that allows a bottle to be poured without removing the cork, allowing the restaurant to offer premium bottles, like Stag’s Leap chardonnay, by the glass.
- Expect fresh, seasonal fare like oven-roasted rack of lamb with whole grain mustard spätzle, broccoli romanesco, grilled scallions and parmesan cheese.
- For more casual, pub-style dining, head to the adjacent Tap Room, or stop in for pre- or post-dinner cocktails.
