Don Alfonso 1890

Acclaimed Amalfi Coast cuisine in Cotai

If you close your eyes when you bite into the Neapolitan cuisine at Don Alfonso 1890, you might find yourself transported to the shores of the Amalfi Coast. Look around the glamorous restaurant and you’ll have no doubt about your Cotai surroundings. That’s the magic of the Versace-led refresh of this longtime Macau staple.

A love letter to the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast, Don Alfonso 1890 is the Chinese outpost of the acclaimed Southern Italian restaurant and boutique hotel of the same name located in the small town of Sant’Anata sui Due Golfi. The most recent iteration of the venue just so happens to have a luxurious Versace twist, thanks to its location within the newly opened Palazzo Versace Macau. Just as the storied fashion house is renowned for its taste, so too is the family-run eatery for its commitment to authentic Southern Italian cuisine.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • In keeping with the original restaurant’s farm-to-table ethos, Don Alfonso 1890 imports produce such as San Marzano tomatoes, Nocellara del Belice olives and Namonte lemons from the family’s own organic farm to provide a genuine epicurean experience.
  • Newcomers should start with Don Alfonso’s Menu la Tradizione to get a taste of the venue’s specialties. Highlights include a bevy of organic vegetables served with horseradish ice cream and a saffron-glazed wild grouper.
  • For an extra indulgent taste of Italy befitting the Versace moniker, opt for the Menu Tartufo Bianco (white truffle set menu). Six courses, ranging from risotto to hazelnut souffle, highlight the delicately flavored funghi with beautifully plated panache.
  • Those looking for a little mid-day indulgence can opt for Don Alfonso 1890’s two- or three-course lunch menu. The options include lighter but no less luxurious fare such as smoked yellowtail with grapefruit mayonnaise or spaghetti with clams and Amalfi lemon.
  • Diners at Don Alfonso 1890 are privy to Grand Lisboa Palace’s extensive wine list. Among the largest in the world, the collection includes more than 450,000 bottles spanning roughly 16,000 labels.

The Look

  • As the signature restaurant of Palazzo Versace Macau, Don Alfonso 1890’s look was art-directed under the watchful eye of Donatella Versace. Smoky grey marble contrasts nicely with pops of pink hues (from pale rose to vibrant fuchsia), all tied together with a few gilded details.
  • In keeping with the rest of the luxury hotel’s design, the Macau restaurant also features a hand-laid terrazzo floor. The venue’s design incorporates floral motifs inspired by the Versace Villa on Lake Como in another nod to the premium brand’s roots.
  • The dining room pays homage to its Macau address with a golden dragon design embroidered onto the back of bespoke chairs and gilded tableware from the Rosenthal x Versace collection.
  • Adorning Don Alfonso 1890’s walls are paintings sourced from Versace’s Palace as well as glimpses of the luxury label’s signature bold Barocco pattern.
