Fairview Dining Room

VERIFIED LUXURY
Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club has long served as one of Durham, North Carolina’s premier hotels for tradition done with a high-end touch. That being the case, it is only fitting that the property’s signature restaurant, Fairview Dining Room, has carried itself in a similarly refined manner since opening its doors back in 1988.

After loosening its collar somewhat (more booths, less delicate place settings) in 2012, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant moves at an easygoing pace but still takes its stellar table service very seriously.

Executive chef Jason Cunningham’s menu is one that’s filled with New American cuisine done with subtle preparatory winks to the old South. Parties of all shapes will enjoy the seasonal dishes — and while a few of them will tap their feet to the nightly piano tunes, all will certainly leave with a smile.

Our Inspector's Highlights
• Fairview has a more refined feel — servers’ uniforms are clean, conversations are muted and window adornments are classic — but it’s not to be taken too seriously.

• If the consistent smiles on the faces of the waitstaff aren’t indication enough, the fact that many tables look directly onto the Duke University Golf Course certainly shows its lighter side.

• At breakfast and lunch, the energy is quite bright — which actually might have as much to do with the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the greens than anything else.

• At dinnertime, the mood is still easy, only it has a little more rhythm to it thanks to the nightly piano tunes.
