The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Nikko

A luxurious hot springs haven
VERIFIED LUXURY

Modern Japanese style meets ancient rituals and natural hot springs at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Nikko. The spa centers around the onsen, a thermal pool filled with natural mineral-rich waters from the surrounding area — it’s a cherished Japanese tradition. Relax in the shared pool or book a time to indulge in a private tub, followed by a hot oil massage.

Hot springs aren't the only offering at the spa. Many of the treatments use natural ingredients found in and around Nikko. One facial features sake lees and Tochigi organic rice, a therapeutic ritual involves placing volcanic basalt stones on the body and even the local spring water plays a role in services. No matter which treatment is reserved, each proves elegant, thoughtful and renewing.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The pool draws water from the renowned Nikko Yumoto Onsen. This spot was discovered more than 1,200 years ago and has been touted for its magical healing properties ever since. Choose from the indoor or outdoor bath, surrounded by nature, or a private onsen experience.
  • Natural wood adorns the treatment spaces and locker rooms, and stone covers the onsen. Overall, the organic materials make the spa feel calm, refined and meditative.
  • The water maintains a temperature of around 172 degrees Fahrenheit and contains hydrogen sulfide and metasilicic acid. These minerals have skin-rejuvenating properties that also can act as a natural moisturizer.
  • Hotel guests can use the spa facilities— including the onsen, locker room and lounge — during their stay, even without booking a treatment. ,
  • The Nikko spa has an adjacent 24-hour gym as well, filled with the latest equipment and surrounded by soft natural wood with a large picture window that overlooks the gardens. A personal trainer is also available on request.

The Treatments

  • Tap into your inner calm with the Nature Immersion, a treatment that involves exfoliation, and a massage focused on reflex points with a warm bamboo wand. The room displays a wooden carving of a peony, which pays homage to Nikko's iconic shrines and temples. The body is also anointed with peony-scented oil to help you relax and feel rejuvenated.
  • There are two facials utilizing pearl nacre, that layer of iridescent shine found in mother-of-pearl shells and coating pearls. This substance helps to soften the skin and hydrate. Choose from the Moist Pearl Facial or the White Pearl Facial, both meant to give the face a healthy sheen and moisturize the skin.
  • Book the Sake Revive and Renew. It includes vitamin-rich sake lees made from Tochigi-grown organic rice and fresh local spring water used on the back to help soften the skin for deep cleaning. The latter comes in the form of a modern-day ultrasound and vacuum-suction pore cleansing tool for the ultimate service. The treatment also includes warm rice bran oil for a full-body and scalp massage.
  • After soaking or a treatment, head to the cypress wood sauna. Basking in the dry heat not only feels lovely but also improves circulation.
