The name Muluk comes from Mayan mythology. It means “droplet of water,” one of the most sacred of the natural forces, representing inner potential and opportunity for growth. In that spirit, begin each treatment with a signature hydrotherapy ritual — circulate among the sauna, steam room, hot and cold plunge pools, experience showers, Jacuzzis, cold room and therapeutic pool with a river view. It will prep you for the spa’s holistic treatments, including massages in natural caves, specialized mud rooms and salt rooms, and more.

There’s plenty of room for guests of the 900-room resort — the Playa del Carmen spa offers 21 treatment rooms carved into the hillside, many with natural stone walls. Ask for the signature suite, overlooking a cenote.
The hydrotherapy circuit is a guest favorite — it’s suggested to arrive 80 minutes or more before a treatment to enjoy the many pools, sauna and steam facilities.
A nearby temazcal (or “sweat lodge”) is the ideal setting to cleanse body and mind, and is complimentary with advanced reservation.

The Treatments

Nearly all treatments use locally produced ingredients, inspired by Mexican artisans and traditions.
Don’t miss the temazcal, a steam bath that takes place in a unique spherical type “tent” or structure. It’s designed to represent a mother’s womb (warm, dark, and private) and is a Mesoamerican concept of purification, where the body, mind and spirit are cleansed in the humid air, with the associated services of shaman, a spiritual guide.
