And those in the wellness world know that the resort’s Sense, A Rosewood Spa at CordeValle is worthy of an overnight visit to this luxury retreat hidden in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

These varied riches are accessible only to its club members and to guests of the hotel’s 45 Craftsman-style rooms, making for an exceedingly exclusive experience. Book a stay (or join the club) and explore the plethora of reviving or relaxing spa treatment options, as well as stellar fitness opportunities.

With local hills in which to hike, courts on which to volley, lawns on which to strike a warrior pose and, of course, ranges on which to drive, Sense Spa provides a welcome pre- or post-activity retreat that draws on nature’s organic healing properties.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Sense utilizes the Rosewood exclusive Maison Caulières skin care line from France. These luxe products, made from ingredients harvested from the 250-year-old Desforges de Caulières family chateau in the Loire Valley, are inspired by nature and the bounty of the farm.
  • Rosewood CordeValle is in California’s oldest wine-growing region, surrounded by a multitude of wineries, so it’s only fitting that several spa treatments utilize vineyard-inspired ingredients such as the Raindrops from the Vines grape seed body wrap.
  • Step up your fitness with Thursday and Saturday morning workouts with Lee Pappas, ‎owner of Morgan Hill’s Brethren CrossFit. Pappas incorporates weights, cardio, trail hikes and circuit training into these popular 9 a.m. sessions enjoyed by both local club members and hotel guests.
  • Have lunch and other treats (champagne and strawberries, for instance) on the patio or in the tea lounge. One of the resort’s three restaurants, One Iron Bar, provides a fresh juice menu.
  • The Rosebuds Junior Spa Menu allows the little ones to experience relaxing kid-friendly treatments like the In Bloom facial (which addresses adolescent skin problems) and the Blossom (a 30-minute scalp or foot massage).
Things to Know
  • Luxury product line Evidens de Beauté, renowned for its combination of French beauty techniques and Japanese skin care technologies, is used for treatments and is available for purchase in the spa’s boutique.
  • If you’re short on time, try one of several 30-minute 19th Hole services designed to be enjoyed alone or in combination, like the head and neck massage, neck and shoulder massage, foot massage, body polish or mini-facial.
  • Additional enhancements at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star spa include waxing, brow shaping, foot scrubs or hot oil scalp service.
The Treatments
  • Treatments are categorized under Sense Journeys designed to unite treatment and natural environment, Sense of Well Being massage therapies, Body Sense exfoliation and mask therapies and Essential Skin Care consultations and facials.
  • Relieve tension with the Comme Une Terre Fertile (Like a Fertile Land), a service that focuses on stretching the muscles to enhance circulation and stimulate the metabolism for detoxification. It begins with an opening ritual in which the hands are massaged with warm, linen-wrapped seeds and proceeds to a full-body rubdown using deeper pressure.
  • Increase energy with the Le Temp D’Un Songe (Solar and Voluptuous Sensation) treatment, inspired by the summer fields. Broom flower and honey fragrances kick-start the senses, while the body is exfoliated to encourage circulation and promote cellular renewal.
The Facilities
  • Enter through the beautifully stocked spa boutique into a sanctuary of calm, where you’ll receive cushy robes and slippers.
  • Savor the water, tea, nuts, cranberries, dark chocolate and seasonal fruit skewers offered in the tea lounge. Warm chai neck wraps provide a prelude to relaxation.
  • The resort’s Craftsman-style theme is carried throughout the San Martin spa, where Asian touches inherent to the artistic aesthetic are utilized. Each treatment room features a private garden designed to bring the outside in.
  • Be sure to arrive early (or stay late) to take advantage of the healing tradition of water via the separate men’s and women’s therapeutic whirlpools and essential-oil-infused steam rooms. The outdoor pool, heated to 80 degrees, features comfortable lounge chairs poised toward the verdant golf course vista.
