The Abu Dhabi EDITION

Abu Dhabi's chic new hot spot
VERIFIED LUXURY

Debuted in November 2018 as EDITION’s first property in the Middle East, The Abu Dhabi EDITION is a stunning microcosm of the city it inhabits. While Arabian culture and heritage are referenced prolifically throughout the property, this place is thoroughly modern and adds a dash of high-octane glamor to Abu Dhabi’s crowded hotel scene.

The UAE capital has become the latest global city to get an EDITION. Conceived by American hotelier Ian Schrager, Abu Dhabi’s incarnation is the group's first location in the Middle East, boasting a prime location on the waterfront of the new upscale Al Bateen Marina.

Whether you come for the nouveau cuisine, the striking art and architecture or the warm and welcoming vibe, you will note that this is a particularly Instagrammable hotel, so don’t plan an e-detox weekend here..

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Abu Dhabi EDITION’s notable exterior is a lattice-like shell that represents the lateen sails of traditional dhow boats, which were historically built in the area.
  • Acclaimed chef Tom Aikens is at the helm of the hotel’s food and beverage offerings, so you can expect every meal here to be as photogenic as it is delicious.
  • The striking five-story lobby holds a large-scale kinetic art installation called In 20 Steps by world-renowned collective Studio Drift. Emulating the human desire to fly, the sculpture spans the entire lounge.
  • The mezzanine level’s mesmerizing water feature is made from black marble and is designed to mimic the movements of the desert sky at night.
  • Pieces (such as braided armchairs) that look more like art than furniture are displayed throughout the lobby lounge. Created by local designer Latifa Saeed, the furnishings are inspired by the distinctive way Emirati children braid hair.

Things to Know

  • The luxury hotel brand partnered with perfume atelier Le Labo to create its signature scent: a blended version of black tea and bergamot that draws forth a sense of comfort and exoticism.
  • Creating an Emirati aesthetic was important to the designers of the Abu Dhabi hotel, so they worked with local artisans and craftspeople to imaginatively evoke the region.
  • The hotel’s music partner, Gray V, created unique soundtracks to enhance your experience with custom playlists that fit seamlessly with the property’s aesthetic.
  • Nearly 80 percent of hot water in the rooms is generated by solar energy.

The Rooms

  • The sprawling property maintains 198 rooms and 57 serviced residences, all featuring a simple wood-paneled look — a nice change of pace from the typically over-the-top accommodations found across the city.
  • In keeping with the streamlined aesthetic, the rooms feature a neutral color palette and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to flood the space. The subtle herringbone pattern of the gray floors is meant to conjure up traditional basket-weaving techniques.
  • The photos in each room are stunning shots of sand dunes by American photographer Brett Weston.
  • Guest rooms offer stylish white marble bathrooms outfitted with brass taps and oak floors. Le Labo custom-scented amenities are standard in each accommodation.

The Restaurants

  • Renowned British chef Tom Aikens teamed up with the design hotel to curate menus for three restaurants: Mediterranean-inspired Alba Terrace, health-focused Market and Oak Room steakhouse.
  • The spot for an aperitif and mezze platter, Alba Terrace overlooks the marina and affords some of the best views in the city. A sunken dining area is recessed into a water feature, so you feel like you are dining in the harbor.
  • Market at EDITION is a new concept for Abu Dhabi — Aikens challenged himself to design the menu without using butter. The spot is billed as a healthy lifestyle eatery, but try the decadent French toast if you want to take a break from the diet.
  • Don’t be fooled by the wood paneling; Oak Room is not your average steakhouse. Exuding a British rock ’n’ roll vibe, the restaurant features a show kitchen, a butcher’s case and a private dining room that was constructed around a striking oak slab. The short rib with mozzarella cheese is Aikens’ favorite dish of the three menus.
  • Check into the Library for a nightcap. The décor is inspired by the written word, and its artwork will captivate as much as its jaw-dropping array of fine gins.
