Austin Proper Hotel & Residences

The capital’s compelling, contemporary new look

A recent addition to the Texas capital city’s Second Street District, Austin Proper Hotel & Residences sparkles. The 244 guest rooms — the 32-story building houses 99 luxury residences, too — have been touched by famed interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s magical hands, meaning every corner is imbued with locally inspired décor and furnishings that have a layered refinement.

Anchoring the hotel’s culinary program is hometown McGuire Moorman Hospitality, so you can count on The Peacock’s Mediterranean-inspired dishes and Goldie’s elegant cocktails hitting all the right notes. The Mockingbird, a grab-and-go café, and La Piscina, a poolside retreat serving Texas-inspired Mexican cuisine, are other tasty dining options.

And when it’s time to work off those indulgences, you can do so with a run around gorgeous Lady Bird Lake, which sits just minutes from Austin Proper’s main lobby, or at the hotel’s Silene Spa when it opens this summer.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The design hotel offers uses every inch as an opportunity to showcase something unexpected, like the vintage carpet patchwork adorning the eye-catching wooden staircase and the charming gingham lobby ceiling.
  • You’ll want to work out in the 2,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gym overlooking Lady Bird Lake. In addition to Peloton bikes and reformers, the gym provides complimentary yoga and boot camp classes each week. If you prefer a private sweat session, the hotel will deliver a Peloton to your room.
  • Cool off in the alfresco fifth-floor pool that peers out over Shoal Creek. Then lounge in one of the three cabanas.
  • Make a beeline for The Peacock for flavorful Mediterranean plates, like harissa-marinated beef and Aleppo and garlic Gulf shrimp.
  • The penthouse is the pinnacle of the hotel’s accommodations. It boasts one bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms and a 550 square-foot furnished terrace. Soak up city and lake views from everywhere, including the tub.

Things to Know

  • The Austin hotel has a fleet of electric bikes that you can borrow to explore downtown.
  • For special events, consider the ballroom, whose floor-to-ceiling windows look out at the library. The space also has a balcony.
  • This is the first LEED GOLD-certified, sustainable hotel in the area.
  • The Proper App allows you to request services, find out all of the best to see and do in the city and also get concierge notifications for secret happy hours.

The Rooms

  • Every room comes with an Apple TV, a Nespresso machine, a Vifa Bluetooth speaker and floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Austin’s craftsman-like homes inspired the room design. The accommodations have Arts and Crafts-style wall coverings, patterned fabric headboards, light wood floors, antique rugs, Fili D’Oro bedding and pieces from local ceramicist Rick Van Dyke.
  • Coated in blue emperador marble, bathrooms come stocked with Aesop toiletries and Parachute robes and have a walk-in shower (some have a standalone tub).

The Restaurants

  • Eclectic mismatched tiles decorate The Peacock, a restaurant open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. In the morning and afternoon, try the lamb meatballs and soft eggs or the shakshuka with halloumi cheese. Add on a side of za'atar-dusted homefries.
  • Dreamy floral wallpaper and a stone sunken bar make Goldie's a distinctive spot for cocktails.
  • A sidewalk café, The Mockingbird serves casual, Mediterranean-inspired breakfast and lunch, including pastries, shawarma, sandwiches, Greek yogurt and coffee.
  • Poolside restaurant La Piscina specializes in coastal Mexican-inspired dishes. Check out the fresh ceviches, wood-fired grill fajitas and the bountiful menu of tequilas and mezcals.
