Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Stylish meets cozy near Lumphini Park

Tucked into Phloen Chit, the posh Bangkok district dotted with embassies, high-end office towers and other stately edifices, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok could be expected to welcome you with a sparse marbled lobby. However, the hotel lives up to its name — taken from the Thai word for a flower garland offered as a sign of hospitality, good health and respect.

Just down the block from Lumphini Park, Bangkok’s palm-tree-lined grand green space, the hotel lobby is always pleasingly abuzz, with its ground-floor CRAFT café, home to fresh caffeine brews secured by a mix of superb Thai roasters, overflowing onto a lush outside garden and acting as an unofficial den for the neighborhood, with pet visitors and all.

The hotel’s four distinct dining spots, public spaces and rooms all have a lively feel, featuring organic materials and works by Thai artisans — you’ll spot bright, striking pieces mixing Thai patterns with modern curves from the collective Artslonga and the sculptor Dong Pongsatat, among others — to match chic-yet-soothing furnishings throughout. The result is a décor that is both exciting and cozy.

The comfort extends to the accommodations, which have traditional Thai motifs; a palette of gray, cream and pale blue; floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Dutch embassy’s gardens or Lumphini Park; Thai artist Phannapast’s neat bird-theme illustrations; large marble-tiled bathrooms with oversized tubs; and Bangkok favorite HARNN amenities in the rooms, suites and residences. The savvy modern-meets-Thai aesthetic, along with an impeccable staff from those meeting you at the lobby check-in to those serving delightful cocktails on the rooftop bar, leaves you feeling less like you’re in a bustling city of more than 8 million than in your own urban sanctuary.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The luxury hotel’s spot for wellness is Amaranth Spa by HARNN, which greets you with a refreshing and flavorful mocktail to ease you into its treatments, including facials, Asian and Western types of massage, nail services, and even experiences designed for kids. The spau ses Biologique Recherche and locally sourced and sustainable products.
  • The café, CRAFT, goes beyond an assortment of single-origin espresso drinks. It serves as an all-day bar with craft beers, coffee-based and other signature cocktails, and more. The café always has a relaxed vibe, whether you need to grab and go with some fresh croissants and steaming coffee in the morning or you want to take in some people and pet watching and lobster taquitos in the evening.
  • The 231 rooms and suites, all with floor-to-ceiling windows, range in size from the 517-square-foot Essential Room to the 3,444-square-foot Celebrity Suite, which comes with a fully stocked bar, whirlpool and balcony. The accommodations use triple-glazed windows to block the city’s sounds, aided by the VIFA Nordic sound system for all of your audio needs, and come with a Nespresso machine, yoga mats, robes by Christian Develter and more to make your space a comfortable retreat.
  • The muse behind the ground-floor restaurant is Ms. Jigger, who is said to live her life journeying the famed food and cocktail havens of the Mediterranean. Helmed by Italy-born chef Danilo Aiassa, Ms. Jigger provides modern Italian fare in an inviting lounge where fresh, locally sourced ingredients are paired with traditional Italian techniques for tasty cicchetti, sumptuous meatballs, made-on-site pastas, artisanal pizzas and more.
  • Any culinary journey at the Bangkok hotel should end at Bar.Yard, the 40th-floor rooftop lounge. Led by Mexico native executive chef Lamberto Valdez Lara, you’ll get American and Mexican barbecue favorites here, alongside Pacific Island cocktails, craft beers and a changing lineup of noteworthy DJs pumping out soul, electro-funk, hip-hop and disco. The pièce de résistance, of course, is the stunning and Instagrammable views of Bangkok’s famed skyline, a must-see, especially in the cooling air near sunset.
