The Barcelona EDITION

Contemporary elegance in El Born
VERIFIED LUXURY

Many who come to Barcelona fall hopelessly in love with El Born district, home to countless sun-kissed medieval squares; a delightful maze of narrow, winding alleyways; and The Barcelona EDITION.

Opened in 2018, the building may look nondescript from the busy street outside, but it’s a different story when you step into the breezy lobby and explore the trendy hotel. Take in the alluring signature scent, admire the slick interior — an effortless blend of classic and contemporary — peruse the array of drinking and dining options, and relax in the smart, minimalist rooms.

The man behind the brand is legendary hotelier Ian Schrager, who co-founded the famed Studio 54 in Manhattan and later helped start the boutique hotel wave. His EDITION empire hews more toward the boutique hotel concept, with understated sophistication, an intimate feel and a highly personalized, yet unfussy, style of service. It’s why people are falling for The Barcelona EDITION.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Set in one of Barcelona’s most popular neighborhoods, the luxury hotel is close to key sites, such as the Picasso Museum and Gothic Quarter, not to mention a vast selection of wine bars, tapas bars and gin joints.
  • With the rooftop bar — and its sweeping views across the city — the opulent Punch Room, the Mediterranean-inflected Bar Veraz restaurant to the sultry Cabaret night spot, you’ll be sure to stay not to go thirsty or hungry while staying here.
  • Ultra-comfy beds and well-kitted-out bathrooms, combined with EDITION’s characteristic minimalist design, create a chic yet cozy feel.
  • Design buffs will enjoy the bespoke artworks that can be found throughout the hotel, from the striking black-and-white 1970s photography in Bar Veraz, to lobby furniture inspired by original designs from the likes of Antoni Gaudí and Salvador Dalí.
  • Service is friendly and personal, without a hint of pretension, in typical EDITION fashion.

Things to Know

  • The Barcelona EDITION’s next-door neighbor is the colorful Mercat de Santa Caterina, the food market favored by most locals. Don’t miss an opportunity to pick up some jamón Iberico (Spanish ham) from Xarcuteria Carles, or locally produced extra virgin olive oil from Olisoliva.
  • If noise is a concern, try the basic Guestroom, whose windows face a quiet alleyway at the back of the hotel, instead of the bustling street.
  • For a romantic tête-a-tête, the best spot in the house is a secluded table for two in a secret corner on the rooftop terrace. Head to the side of the terrace that faces the ocean, turn left and look for the corner table set away from all the other guests (which also offers the best views of the city).
  • If you like the design pieces in The Barcelona EDITION, like the Dalí-inspired gold Bracelli lamps in the lobby or Gaudí’s Calvet chairs at the concierge’s desk, check out bdbarcelona.com, to find out how to order them for your own home.

The Rooms

  • Accommodations feel homey with touches such as plush faux fox-fur throws, extra-soft robes and chaise lounges.
  • You’ll sleep soundly on EDITION’s firm custom-made mattresses; soft but supportive pillows with an inner chamber of feathers and a surrounding layer of pure down; and silky-smooth 300-thread-count sateen sheets.
  • Allow yourself some extra time in the morning to luxuriate in the enticing fragrance that Le Labo has made especially for EDITION’s bathroom amenities. The scent is so good, you will want to take the toiletries home.
  • The Barcelona hotel is on course to becoming plastic-free. It has eliminated plastic from its minibars, where all packaging is either glass or tetra brik, and has vowed to get rid of all single-use toiletries from its guest rooms as part of EDITION’s global initiative.
  • The loft suites offer the best vistas of Santa Caterina Market’s magnificent multi-colored mosaic roof designed by local ceramic artist Toni Cumella. Soak in the marble bathtub in your giant bathroom while marveling at Cumella’s handiwork next door.
