The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

A South Carolina golf haven
VERIFIED LUXURY
The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, a Five-Star hotel, resembles a grand seaside mansion. Set in the heart of a 10,000-acre barrier island and resort within a private gated community, The Sanctuary provides a spectacular beachfront setting, a Five-Star spa and distinctive dining, including the Five-Star Ocean Room.

The tastefully understated lobby with wide-plank walnut floors, handcrafted rugs and original artwork and antiques is reminiscent of an elegant private home, with intimate seating areas arranged around two massive limestone fireplaces. A bank of oversized windows looks out across the perfectly manicured Grand Lawn to the beach just beyond. Two large staircases feature original hand-painted murals depicting the island's wildlife.

The spacious guest rooms (most of which provide ocean views) and suites have a breezy yet traditional feel with coastal colonial-inspired furnishings and art, large soaking tubs and balconies. The airy Lobby Bar, decorated in a refined nautical style, is the perfect gathering place for a cocktail after a day on one of the resort's five championship golf courses or partaking in one of the island's outdoor, nature or wellness activities. Once you experience all of this plus The Sanctuary's genuine Lowcountry hospitality, you won't want to leave.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The décor, staff and overall design make you feel like you’re being welcomed into someone’s Southern mansion, complete with touches of a grand English home.
  • Every guest room has a balcony or terrace where you can enjoy the view and breeze off of the water. The balcony is the perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of Joe or just listen to the peaceful music of the slamming waves.
  • Be sure to visit The Spa at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island for unique treatments like the Amethyst Geo Lift Facial, which employs the state's native gemstone, and the Kiawah Golf Ball Massage.
  • When you arrive at the luxury South Carolina hotel, you'll find notecards containing artwork by local artists as a special memento to take home.
  • Be sure to book tee times early to The Ocean Course. The Pete Dye-designed masterpiece, ranked among the world’s best courses, hosted the 2021 PGA Championship won in spectacularly historic fashion by Phil Mickelson.
Things to Know
  • The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort offers an ocean-side adults-only pool, an adjoining family pool and an all-ages indoor pool. Sanctuary guests also enjoy access to two other resort pool complexes, giving you numerous choices to find the one that's just right.
  • Don't worry about your shoes getting scuffed on the golf course or your loafers looking worn for your meeting; the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island gives out complimentary shoe shines to all guests.
The Rooms
  • The guest rooms at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island are stunning. When you enter, you’ll notice a foyer with tiled floors that feel as if you’re walking into your own private, luxury apartment.
  • Dark wood furnishings and a soft color palette create a calming sanctuary that reflects the hotel’s name and mission.
  • Every room at the Five-Star hotel has its own balcony with either a garden, ocean or premium ocean view.
  • The spacious bathrooms have a stand-alone shower with a rain shower head and a large soaking tub.
The Restaurants

  • The Ocean Room serves dinner in a romantic, formal dining room. The restaurant is known for its aged prime steaks and fresh seafood accompanied by sumptuous sides made from seasonally sourced local ingredients. The adjoining lounge takes on a clubby, dark-paneled atmosphere and provides the regular Ocean Room menu in a more relaxed setting.
  • Jasmine Porch, known for its breakfast buffet, features a gorgeous, dramatic room as well as limited outdoor seating. Serving three meals daily, the restaurant’s extensive menu is heavily influenced by traditional Lowcountry fare making use of the highest quality ingredients, most sourced from local farms and fisheries.
  • Loggerhead Bar & Grill offers seasonal poolside dining. Comforting bar food such as sandwiches, wraps and tacos make this a popular lunch choice for families and beachgoers.
  • Beaches and Cream is a quaint, small grab-and-go serving coffee, baked goods and sandwiches, not to mention its signature organic ice creams from local Wholly Cow Creamery. The shop creates over-the-top seasonal shakes (order one of the spiked versions).
