ITC Grand Central, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Mumbai

Colonial grandeur in Mumbai
VERIFIED LUXURY

ITC Grand Central seems like a beautiful relic from the British Raj era of Mumbai. It’s steeped in Old World charm with a cobblestone courtyard and pathways, British colonial and Victorian renaissance architecture and a Gothic-influenced spire.

The hotel also draws influence from its land’s former tenants: a plethora of cotton mills and before that, a colonial settlement that Bombay governor William Hornby called home. Today, ITC Grand Central resides in Mumbai’s upscale district of Parel that’s close to the business and commercial centers of the city.

Despite looking to the past for design inspiration, this is a thoroughly modern property. Like all other ITC hotels, the eco-friendly Grand Central outpost is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certified. Plus, a spa entices with Indian therapies, and an array of restaurants channel everything from a Dublin bar to a Shanghainese fine-dining venue to sate your every craving.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • For the most exclusive experience, opt for one of the Tower Rooms. Sitting on the upper floors of the hotel, these accommodations come with a dedicated 24-hour butler service and access to the Towers Club Lounge, where you can partake in complimentary refreshments.
  • Perched on the 30th floor, the two-level Point of View lounge serves up champagne and sweeping vistas of the city and the water.
  • Retreat to Kaya Kalp — The Spa for traditional Indian and ayurvedic healing. They have a steam room and a shower attached to the spa. Zap tension with the gemstone massage, which employs stones and aromatic Indian blends, or an Indian head massage.
  • Come ready to dine: savor meat skewers and flavorful Indian curries at the aptly named Kebabs & Kurries, or veer more toward fine dining with Shanghai Club’s crab with Sichuan chili bean sauce.
  • When you need a reprieve from hot, sticky Mumbai weather, plunge into the pool, which is partially tucked inside to shield you from the sun.

Things to Know

  • The courtyard, called Millsquare, is a nod to the mill culture of the area. It sits at the heart of the property. Lounge around in the evening or afternoon with drinks or coffee. It also hosts various events and musical nights.
  • Frederick’s Lounge is a casual diner that is perfect for quick bites, tea or maybe a drink. It doubles up as a meeting space as well.

The Rooms

  • Even the most basic rooms are quite large, and all are done up in pastel and cool tones.
  • Most of the accommodations look out over the tower or the terrace garden, although a few of them do peek at the skyline of Mumbai.
  • The Mumbai hotel caters to female solo travelers with its Eva Rooms. Women staying in these accommodations can rest easy with extra security measures such as a door-view camera, phone screenings, help at the airport and 24-hour female butlers to cater to any needs.
  • Find slumber by requesting some special sleep-inducing amenities, including a soothing bath ritual, children’s storybooks for bedtime, a pillow menu and essential oils.

The Restaurants

  • Shanghai Club surveys Chinese cuisine from all the five regions of the country. The interiors are done up in a red old world fashion with relaxed seating. Tuck into dishes like braised chicken Xing Jian in a polished dining room with exposed Burma teak beams with carved dragon heads and parquet floors.
  • Kebabs & Kurries is the spot to dig into some authentic Indian dishes that made appearances at the royal homes of the nawabs of the yesteryear. Try dishes like murgh angaar (chicken marinated in a yogurt and red chilli paste mixture) and tala gosht (a spice-laden meat) alongside the smoky kebabs.
  • No matter what time hunger strikes, you can make a beeline to 24-hour Hornby’s Pavilion for its buffet spread.
  • Kelly-green walls, rich wood and copious amounts of beer at Dublin gives you a taste of an Irish pub.
