Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

Bucolic bliss in historic Napa Valley
VERIFIED LUXURY

Drive down a dusty road lined with freshly planted vineyards roughly 46 miles north of San Francisco and you’ll find Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection, a rustic yet refined new property. Stanly Ranch borders both Sonoma and Napa valleys, making it a prime location for wine tasting and the closest hotel to the City by the Bay.

With denim-and-cowboy-hat-clad bellhops, wildflowers growing everywhere and stone and wooden farmhouses doubling as guest rooms, it feels more like a working ranch than a traditional hotel — and that’s intentional. It’s not simply a place to stay; it’s a place to discover a new level of wellbeing through a delicious dinner, fantastic wine tasting or mindful spa treatment. Stanly Ranch hopes to create an inclusive community to welcome locals and tourists alike in wine country.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Casual elegance abounds at this luxurious and thoughtful 135-room resort. Although the landscaping is young — the lavender in the fields has yet to bloom — the property is a stunning celebration of the native terrain. Everywhere you look, you see vineyards. The countryside has never looked more gorgeous than when you’re wandering through the sunny, slightly breezy grounds.
  • The Napa resort engages locals and tourists with a unique program of experiences. On a recent Saturday, Stanly’s Cycling Club met for a 36-mile ride up Mount Veeder; afterward, cyclers enjoyed a selection of pastries and breakfast snacks at the Village, an outdoor community gathering space between the ranch’s coffee shop, Gavel, and the restaurant, Bear. Other noteworthy options include a tour of the Grange, the ranch’s culinary garden with farmer Nick Runkle, a meet and greet featuring the birds on the property with falconer Rebecca Rosen, happy-hour tastings with neighboring winemakers, morning yoga movement classes, live music and much more.
  • Bear serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays and weekend brunch in a gorgeous indoor-outdoor space. Executive chef Garrison Price’s menu spotlights mostly plant-based items focusing on nuts, seeds, fruit, seafood and vegetables inspired by a bear’s natural diet. Devour farm-to-table dishes like crudités with cashew-miso dip, bison tartare with egg yolk, and housemade tagliatelle with watercress pesto and foraged mushrooms.
  • Enjoy immersive wellness at Halehouse, the ranch’s state-of-the-art spa and fitness center. It’s home to an adults-only pool, a circuit program with a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and cold plunge, and treatments beyond the regular massage or facial. Examples include lymphatic drainage and dry brushing, therapeutic deep tissue release and facials that use the beloved French skincare line Biologique Recherche. Unlike the majority of spas in the area, you don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy a memorable mindful experience at Halehouse.
  • Stanly Ranch has three perfect pools: the aforementioned Halehouse oasis at the top of the resort, a provincial-style pool with dining option Basin Bar (the only restaurant exclusive to guests) and a kid-friendly pool with beachside entry. All of them include cabanas and private nooks and crannies for poolside rest and relaxation.

Things to Know

  • Since opening in late April 2022, the hotel has hosted multiple weddings every weekend, so reserve a room ahead of time, especially during the busy summer high season.
  • Stanly Ranch is dog friendly with no weight or breed limits.
  • Biking and hiking paths weave their way through the 712-acre property, making it one of the most open-to-the-local-public resorts in the entire valley.
  • Notice the commissioned work by local artists, from incredible dried floral arrangements in the restaurant to custom abstract art that doubles as bathroom doors in the cottages. The striking Infinity sculpture by artist Gordon Huether leaves a lasting impression.
  • Upon arrival, you’ll receive a glass of chardonnay or pinot noir, the varietals that grow best in Carneros, made by a nearby producer.
