The Colony Hotel, Palm Beach

A bold Palm Beach landmark
VERIFIED LUXURY
A Palm Beach landmark for nearly 70 years, the legendary Colony Hotel sits at the center of the island’s social scene. Throughout its history, the hotel often served as the home-away-from-home for British royalty (the Duke and Duchess of Windsor), celebrities (Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, John Lennon and Yoko Ono) and U.S. presidents (Ford, Clinton and both Bushes).

Notable names book weeks- and months-long stays at this small boutique hotel for its throwback charm, friendly atmosphere and thoroughly Palm Beach feel. It’s ideally located adjacent to famed Worth Avenue shopping strip in the heart of Palm Beach. Just three blocks away from many upscale shops — Tiffany, Gucci, Cartier, Tourneau, Ferragamo — and galleries, it’s surrounded by classic Mizner architecture. Even better, the beach sits at the end of the block.

Our Inspector's Highlights
• The architecure offers a mini history lesson — The Colony boasts an lovely art deco aesthetic typical of the hotels built in post-Depression-era Florida that’s defined by its unique exterior square columns and smooth lines.

• Expect a lively Florida color scheme with shades like palm green, sea blue and coral. The palette serves as a vibrant backdrop while still continuing with The Colony’s traditional British colonial feel.

• The Colony’s signature Polo Lounge is one of the finest steakhouses in Palm Beach. It offers a wide selection of prime aged-onsite beef and delicious seafood, accompanied by fresh herbs and vegetables grown in the hotel’s own garden.

• It's family-owned, which means they know how to take care of families (as well as vacationing couples). Your kids can get cookies and milk at bedtime, peruse kids menus and even get a custom-designed itinerary for a special day out.

• The guest services team aims to please — they can arrange transportation around town, a trip to nearby Miami, time on nearby tennis courts, golf tee times, fishing charters, in-room spa services and a whole lot more.

Things to Know
• The hotel got a brand-new look following a recent $9 million renovation by internationally renowned decorator Carleton Varney, president/owner of Dorothy Draper & Co. Inc. (the trailblazing Draper was his mentor).

• Varney's style is over the top (the fourth floor is painted with 19 different colors, and bright fronds pattern everything from chairs to carpeting) and eye-catching (the lobby has a 1,300-pound crystal chandelier and gray-and-pink Jasper Peony wallpaper that’s also featured in Tory Burch’s Beverly Hills store).

• This unique little gem serves as a venue for many destination weddings.
The Rooms
• Each of the hotel’s 91 rooms and one- and two-bedroom suites are different with vivid upholstery and luxurious Frette linens, unique lamps and artwork, and a cheerful palette of floral patterns and bold contrasts.

• Rooms give way to dazzling views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Everglades golf course and the town of Palm Beach.

• The two-bedroom Presidential and Duke of Windsor penthouses are worth the splurge — they come with a baby grand piano, private verandas with panoramic views and 10-foot-high ceilings and Italian chandeliers.
The Restaurants
• At the Polo Lounge, you won’t find any drab, clichéd steakhouse décor here — floor-to-ceiling photographic murals of polo players by well-known artist Harry Benson bedeck the walls, wooden chairs come upholstered with grass-green seats and blue gingham cloth covers the tables.

• Start off the evening with the popular Maine lobster bisque with Martell Cordon Bleu cognac, and then move onto an entrée like the Dover sole, which is deboned tableside, or the juicy filet mignon.

• After dinner, check out the Palm Beach hotel’s Royal Room Supper Club. It has earned a reputation as a premier cabaret venue, hosting more than 100 superstars, including Debby Boone, Judy Collins, Steve Tyrell and John Davidson.
