Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai

Shanghai's modern marvel
VERIFIED LUXURY
As you pull up to the new Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, one thing is clear — you can successfully create a city hotel that feels like a secluded escape. While the classic Art Deco architecture dominates the city’s famous Bund, Shanghai’s Pudong side is increasingly more modern, and so is this Five-Star hotel.

Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai takes full advantage of its position along the Huangpu River, from the stunning views seen through floor-to-ceiling windows in guest rooms and its accessibility to the Shanghai Metropolitan Marine Yacht Club to the unique Segway tours along the water.

Its sprawling square footage doesn’t compromise personal service, and there’s a real sense of pride amongst those working at the property. Drink a Shanghai Tini outside on the terrace at Qi Bar overlooking the river, or unwind at the all-suite spa where treatments begin and end with the sound of a cymbal.

Don’t forget to pay attention to the vast collection of art here, either. The hotel enlisted the help of the Art Front Gallery to curate 4,000 original pieces throughout the property, including both international and Chinese artists.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Between the riverfront position and manicured grounds viewable from various points around the hotel (restaurants, bars), you get a unique combination of a metropolitan atmosphere with a slice of sanctuary.
  • Measuring in at more than 8,000-square-feet, the Mandarin Oriental’s Presidential Suite, the largest in the city, affords plenty of luxe touches such as a garden terrace and unbeatable river vistas.
  • The sprawling waterfront Shanghai hotel houses three main restaurants, ranging in cuisine and style from Asian and European fare in a bright, airy setting to an all-day dining spot with a show kitchen.
  • The butterfly-themed Five-Star spa is a must-visit for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The treatments are sublime, but the impressive wet areas and amenity-packed vanities in the suites make this spa truly special.
  • With a stunning design, top mixologists and some of the city’s best DJs, Qi Bar on the lobby level of the hotel is the place to be in Shanghai after dark.
Things to Know
  • Reset your qi by booking a Chinese Meridian Massage at the Shanghai hotel's Five-Star spa. Therapist Newman Chen focuses on acupuncture points to relax your muscles and reduce tension in this sublime 90-minute service.
  • Located on the same floor as the meeting facilities, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai offers a unique — and arguably ingenious — wedding showroom designed to make planning the big day easier.
  • Aside from the hotel itself, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai also offers furnished executive apartments where you can experience all of the luxurious amenities found at the hotel such as 24-hour concierge and housekeeping services, spa access and even a VIP card for discounts throughout the property.
  • Pillows on your bed not to your liking? Just ask to see the hotel’s pillow menu to pick the perfect plush accompaniment to your slumber.
The Rooms
  • A contemporary, streamlined and fresh design approach reigns supreme, from the sleek dark wood lining the walls of the rooms to the generously sized windows and marble-swathed bathrooms. Pops of colors such as indigo and green also make appearances, but nothing is overly dominant.
  • Furnished with plush patterned carpets, elegant wood furnishings and the choice of king or twin beds swathed in luxurious Frette linens, rooms enjoy a comfortably serene feel.
  • A soothing taupe marble is the major material used in the bathrooms, and a heavenly shower provides a rainforest showerhead for the ultimate bathing experience.
  • The standout feature of the bathroom is undoubtedly the stark white circle tub, which overlooks the Huangpu River if you book one of the river view rooms.
The Restaurants
  • Grab a contemporary French meal at Fifty 8° Grill helmed by famous chef Richard Ekkebus, where the light-filled space overlooks some of the hotel’s green spaces and boasts an impressive 250-label wine list.
  • Head to Yong Yi Ting for Jiang Nan cuisine (meaning south of the Yangtze) helmed by local Shanghainese chef Tony Lu. The restaurant specializes in baked, steamed and pan-friend dim sum.
  • Opt for a more causal option with Zest, the unique display kitchen setting where you can actually witness the chefs preparing the food for the day. Menu highlights include Hainanese chicken with ginger rice and Angus beef short ribs with Chinese style soy glazed, steamed bok choy.
  • Of course, the iconic Mandarin Cake Shop makes an appearance at the Shanghai hotel as well, where you can sit down for a delectable pastry or chocolate carefully created by executive pastry chef Thierry Metee.
