The Green O

Remote, refined cabins deep in the woods
VERIFIED LUXURY

When dreams of nights tucked under the stars among pine trees need fulfillment, The Green O offers a rustic getaway. Luxury and nature intersect at this secluded resort in Montana's Blackfoot River Valley, complete with crisp air, wildlife and champagne.

Located on the edge of the 37,000-acre Paws Up Ranch, The Green O shares the land with sister property The Resort at Paws Up. While the latter spot, a glamping pioneer, caters to the whole family, The Green O elevates the experience with stylish, modern wood cabins solely for adults.

The cabins have kitchens, but you will want to dine at The Social Haus. It may be in the middle of Big Sky Country woods, but the restaurant delivers impressive multicourse meals. (And if you want other culinary or activity options, you can venture over to Paws Up.)

At this no-tipping, all-inclusive hotel, the rate includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with beverages; round-trip transfers to and from Missoula Montana Airport; and a Lexus SUV to help you get around on the expansive grounds. You won’t need to bring anything but a willingness to embrace the great outdoors.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Choose from 12 design-forward standalone cabins in four distinct categories: the Tree Haus puts you 23 feet above the ground amid the treetops, the Light Haus comes with a glass-pavilion-like design and a skylight in the bedroom for optimal star gazing, the Green Haus melds the indoors and outdoors and is topped with a living roof, and the Round Haus offers circular structures with 180-degree panoramic views. And each haus is ensconced in ponderosa pines for the utmost privacy.
  • Each of the houses configures floor-to-ceiling and picture windows so you can truly take in the splendor of the surrounding forest in every season.
  • Sit by the outdoor fireplace or warm up in the private hot tub beside it. Better yet, do both. While all accommodations have these options, these features adjoin in the Round, Light and Green cabins’ alfresco space.
  • All the accommodations encircle The Social Haus, which provides spectacular meals prepared by executive chef Brandon Cunningham. Eat a daily-changing breakfast, lunch and dinner here, the latter of which features multiple courses. Menu items speak to local and seasonal ingredients — think fresh and preserved cherries, wild chamomile, elk and Douglas fir tips. Bonus: the open kitchen specializes in open-fire cooking, so you may get a little show with your meal.
  • Partake in the varied year-round activities in Montana’s pristine landscape. For example, in the winter, try dog sledding with Iditarod champion Alaskan Huskies, snowmobiling and fat tire biking across the tundra. During the summer, opt for horseback riding, ATV ranch tours and hot-air balloon rides.

Things to Know

  • Instead of typical treatment rooms, Spa Town offers luxurious services in individual tents. Spa Town relocates in the winter to the Saddle Club, changing the spa’s scenery and overall feel.
  • Indulge in massages, mineral mud wraps, a Blackfoot River Rocks hot stone treatment and more.
  • There's a fitness center in connection to the spa, although it remains in a set, indoor location. Not that you'll mind — you will get views of rolling hills, the vast sky and the mountains while peddling the stationary bike or treadmill.
  • Immerse yourself in nature by taking part in forest bathing, or booking a private buti, hatha or vinyasa yoga class in the woods.
  • If you don’t want to step away from your stunning haus, Spa Town will come to you for a service.
