The Chedi Andermatt

East meets West opulence by the slopes
VERIFIED LUXURY

When it opened in 2013 across from the Andermatt train station, The Chedi Andermatt came as a big surprise. Designed by star architect Jean-Michel Gathy, the property resembles a supersized, high-rise Swiss chalet on the outside, but the interiors deftly blend homegrown alpine-chic with serene Asian accents for a Heidi-goes-Zen look.

The East-meets-West fusion isn't limited to mere décor, though. The property's constellation of restaurants includes a Japanese kitchen dishing up inventive sushi, and its spa features Asian treatments designed to balance your chakras.

But if that's too much transcendental calm, the luxury hotel’s indoor and outdoor pools, 18-hole golf course, fully stocked wine cellar and cigar library are on hand to help you indulge.

The Chedi's sprawling Bar and Living Room may be the best place to appreciate the multicultural mix. Tibetan temple bells sit in rows next to reindeer heads; contemporary divans wearing on-trend faux fur blankets look out on bookshelves lined with ceramic Chinese bowls. The effect underscores the elegant simplicity both Swiss and Asian aesthetics share, and winds up looking happily seamless.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Chedi Andermatt's heart, its courtyard, changes shape according to the season. In winter, it turns into an ice-skating rink and in the summer, it morphs into an outdoor terrace where you can toast the alpine sunset with designer cocktails.
  • Ski season guests are assigned a winter butler who will heat and prepare your ski equipment and transport you to the slopes and back again.
  • The 16-foot-tall wine-and-cheese cellar features more than 40 regional Swiss cheeses stacked on glass shelves like jewelry. In addition to every iteration of Gruyère, there is a jersey blue made from Jersey cows imported from America, just in case you're feeling homesick.
  • True to The Chedi's bicultural theme, The Restaurant is helmed by a team of Thai, Indian and Chinese chefs under the direction of chef de cuisine Armin Egli. Both Eastern and Western preparations of each dish are offered, so you can choose between veal cordon bleu and a spicy veal curry infused with coconut and lemongrass.
  • A surprise addition to any alpine ski resort, The Chedi features an 18-hole golf course to keep you semi-sporty in warmer months.

Things to Know

  • A seasonal property, The Chedi is closed from late April to mid-May.
  • The lighting systems in the guest rooms are complex and often counter-intuitive, so it's easiest to use the iPad master control sitting by the bed.
  • A cold-weather treat, The Chalet restaurant is only open in winter. This cozy spot is the perfect place to warm up over a steaming pot of truffled fondue.
  • The Andermatt hotel's wine cellar contains a stellar private collection of Château Mouton-Rothschild labels.

The Rooms

  • Driving home the multicultural theme, the 123 rooms feature pine-wood walls, low-to-the-floor mosaic stone chabudai  tables, recessed lighting, gas fireplaces and balconies. The best surprise: all offer luxe Hästens beds.
  • Bathrooms can be either integrated into the room or closed off through the use of sliding screen doors. Each consists of a free-standing white ceramic tub, heated stone floors, a walk-in shower, double sinks mounted in black marble and Acqua di Parma toiletries.
  • Room categories range from 559-square-foot Deluxe Rooms to 1,184-square-foot Deluxe Suites all the way up to four spacious signature suites.
  • The massive Gotthard Suite provides a family-friendly paradise with five bedrooms and five bathrooms spread over 3,767 square feet. A wine cabinet and iPad integration suit grown-up travelers while bunk beds and a play area keep kids entertained. The 355-square-foot terrace is the perfect place for everyone to unwind together.

The Restaurants

  • The Restaurant features four open studio kitchens (Western, Asian, pastry and cold food), so you can watch the chefs prepare your border-jumping dinner.
  • With rustic alpine beams, classic red-and-white checkered tablecloths and a candlelit ambiance, The Chalet serves up raclette and steaming pots of fondue all winter long.
  • Anything but a trendy afterthought, The Japanese Restaurant offers a multi-course kaiseki menu that includes delicacies like yellowfin tuna dressed with goose liver flakes, lychee and pine nut brittle.
  • International comfort foods (dim sum, club sandwiches, truffle risotto) are available almost around the clock in most public spaces, including The Bar, The Lobby lounge and Living Room.
  • A Sunday champagne brunch and a traditional afternoon tea in The Lobby add to the dining options.
