Edgewood Tahoe

Lakefront charm with a splash of luxury
VERIFIED LUXURY

Though Edgewood Tahoe didn’t open until June 2017, its alpine address had been a popular destination for golf lovers, soon-to-be-wed couples and diners long before. Through a beloved George Fazio-designed course (that his nephew, Tom, later renovated) and delightful event spaces that debuted in 1968, Edgewood became a must-visit venue along Lake Tahoe’s south shore. And with the $100 million expansion, the draw of the meticulously cut greens and awe-inspiring greenery (the property is surrounded by majestic pines) has only heightened.

The 154-room hotel exudes a lakefront charm without any of the pretense. Rustic wood panel art in the cathedral-ceilinged lobby comes from an old picket fence. You’ll be so wrapped up in the Bistro’s warm, amicable air that you might not even notice that the kitchen works with a non-GMO philosophy. And yes, that really was Tony Romo you just passed in the hall.

But ever since the 235-acre Edgewood Tahoe opened its doors in the ’60s, its only goal has been to make all guests — it doesn’t matter if you’re a famous ex-Dallas Cowboys quarterback or a family visiting from Detroit — feel welcomed.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • While the luxury hotel features locally sourced granite and wood elements throughout, the Great Room is where these designs really shine. We can’t blame your eyes from being drawn to 38-foot-tall windows looking onto the lake, but don’t miss the carved limestone wall or the deer-head art representing the area’s indigenous history.
  • Where there’s a fireplace, you’ll find a gathering place. (Spoiler: there are a lot of fireplaces around the property.) Yet the best spot for a quiet conversation or game of cards may be in the second-floor library with a massive table carved from a tree.
  • The spa is an 8,500-square-foot sanctuary with eight treatment rooms named after local flora such as “Sugar Pine.” A 2019 makeover will introduce radiant heating and a privacy wall to the outdoor hot tub area while new furniture will make the waiting area even more functional.
  • Edgewood Tahoe’s backyard provides all the essentials for a good time: an events lawn, fire pits, chairs, a small beachfront and a hot tub and pool that stay open throughout the year.
  • The hotel is an all-season destination. In the warmer months, it partners with local outfitters for on-the-water excursions (see: Clearly Tahoe for clear-bottom kayak tours). During ski season, the boutique hotel sells lift tickets, has private shuttles to gondolas and will even exchange your gear for shoes in case you want to stay in the village after your runs.

Things to Know

  • S’mores are offered at the fire pit every night, but Edgewood Tahoe has been known to mix things up with popcorn and Rice Krispies Treats pretty regularly, too.
  • While the aforementioned Tony Romo is already a regular at the hotel, familiar faces from television (the cast of Modern Family) and the White House (former president Bill Clinton) have also stayed at the property.
  • Many of the top celebrity golfers participate in the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course’s annual American Century Championship. Romo fought off a competitive field that included NBA star Steph Curry, NFL legend Sterling Sharpe and others to win the 2018 title.
  • One of the reasons Edgewood Tahoe can keep its calm, close-to-nature energy is because it doesn’t have an onsite casino. If you do want to test your luck with slots and blackjack, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe is just minutes away.

The Rooms
  • The cabin feel of the public spaces easily transfers to individual rooms shaded in various blues and browns. Leather couches, watercolor landscapes, Aveda toiletries and other natural embellishments (dressers with tree-shaped handles, towel holders carved from bark) also help create a sense of place.
  • Every room comes with a fireplace, soaking tub and walk-in shower.
  • Units range from the cozy Tahoe Room (500 square feet) to the 1,500-square-foot Emerald Suite that includes an eight-seat dining table, a not-so-mini bar and a king-sized bed with a hand-carved headboard.

The Restaurants

  • Executive chef Michael “Mod” O’Dowd’s culinary style has a unique flair that stems from his breadth of experience at award-winning spots, including Five-Star Kai Restaurant in Phoenix.
  • Edgewood’s The Bistro has a subtle nautical theme that flows with blue hues, brown leather chairs and a brilliant rope ceiling that was conceived by an Australian artist.
  • The Bistro works with seasonal ingredients, but you can always expect a world of flavor at breakfast (pumpkin bread French toast), lunch (Korean chicken sandwich) and dinner (Colorado rack of lamb).
  • Find the Lake Tahoe hotel’s two other long-established eateries, the refined Edgewood Restaurant and the utterly relaxing Brooks’ Bar & Deck, just a short walk over at the clubhouse.
