Conrad Algarve

A modern palatial retreat in the Algarve

Driving up the palm-tree- and fountain-lined pathway leading to the dome-capped porte cochere of Conrad Algarve, you might think you’ve arrived at a countryside Portuguese palace. The effect is intentionally grand — the luxury hotel’s design takes its cues from the country’s regal 18th-century architecture, albeit with a modern twist. A light-filled lobby looks even brighter with stark-white floors and walls of windows directing your gaze upward to an impressively large dome sitting atop five stories. You also can see a hint of Conrad Algarve’s whimsical side: the marble-clad space features a menagerie of carved wooden animals, including a cheetah, lion and horned owl.

The regal touches don’t stop at the lobby. Chandelier-clad bathrooms and marble floors are de rigueur in all 154 guest rooms here, while a kid’s club playroom is straight out of a storybook. And what kind of palace would this be if it didn’t have an internationally acclaimed restaurant and posh spa for all-day pampering? Throw in a friendly staff and proximity to shopping (across the street), golf (the golf concierge can set you up with tee times at numerous courses within 2.5 miles) and the beach (the seasonal hotel shuttle will bring you there for free), Conrad Algarve might just be the fairytale escape you’ve been waiting for.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Gusto is the Algarve hotel’s heralded restaurant and a tough reservation to snag. Have the concierge finagle a table so you can savor prestigious chef Heinz Beck’s Mediterranean creations.
  • You can’t go wrong with any of the luxury hotel’s 154 spacious accommodations. Starting at 484 square feet, even standard accommodations boast separate rain showers and soaking tubs (complete with a TV), plush settees at the foot of the king-sized bed and generously sized patios. The Infinity Penthouse, in particular, wows with its own infinity pool under a retractable glass roof and a private bridge to the hotel’s spa.
  • The five-room Conrad Spa may be small, but it's big on pampering. In addition to rejuvenating treatments featuring Intraceuticals products and Aromatherapy Associates essential oils, the facility offers an ice fountain, experience showers and an exclusive cabana-lined indoor-outdoor pool.
  • The family-friendly hotel makes life easy for parents and fun for little ones thanks to the dreamy Little C Palace. The kids club comes with both indoor and outdoor play areas as well as themed activities and age-appropriate outings.
  • Conrad Algarve takes pride in providing locally minded excursions to help you get a taste of Portugal’s southern coast. Explore a local vineyard where you can blend your own wine or join a fisherman as he gathers razor clams on the beach.

The Restaurants

  • Multicourse tasting menus are the order of the day at Gusto, though à la carte options are also available. Upscale Mediterranean plates might include nduja-crusted langoustine or lamb saddle served in a veggie-packed madras curry.
  • At the hotel’s more casual all-day-dining Louro Restaurant, a bountiful American-style buffet breakfast and Portuguese lunch dishes are served up with pool views.
  • The playfully purple Lago Lounge offers a chic spot for a pre-dinner drink or late-night sweet treat. A spacious terrace provides a relaxing retreat overlooking the hotel’s gorgeous grounds.
