Solbar

An alfresco Calistoga hot spot
VERIFIED LUXURY

Solage, An Auberge Resort makes it easy to stop and smell the roses — quite literally. The property, at the northernmost end of Napa’s famed Silverado Trail, is blanketed in thousands of white blooms that frame every inch of this gracious Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star stay. These rustic roses create a path from the entrance, to the lobby, to the twinkle-light bedecked patio of signature restaurant Solbar, where upon arrival it’s clear that this is a place to unwind.

With its covetable terrace, hot spot Solbar gives you the quintessential Napa experience: dining on fresh, seasonal California cuisine with ample local wine under the stars.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Be sure to dine alfresco when you visit. Solbar’s spacious tree-shaded terrace overlooks the resort’s Instagram-worthy Olympic-sized pool, the largest in the Napa Valley.
  • Executive chef Massimo Falsini brings an Italian flair to the restaurant’s California cuisine. His agnolotti carbonara, for example, is playfully highlighted on the menu with a quote: “Chef grew up in Trastevere, Rome…You should try this carbonara.” And you definitely should.
  • Solbar is one of the few spots in the Valley that is open — and bustling — continuously from breakfast through dinner.
  • The vibe is refined yet relaxed — just like the Napa Valley itself, which is, after all, simply a farming community whose product just happens to be revered worldwide. Staff is knowledgeable and professional without being stuffy.
  • Enhance your meal by allowing Solbar’s amiable sommelier and beverage manager Scott Turnbull to select pairings.

Things to Know

  • Don’t let Solbar’s wine country locale intimidate when choosing your beverage. The user-friendly wine list is categorized in easy-to-survey terms: crisp, aromatic or rich whites and elegant, hearty or robust reds.
  • For lighter fare, pull up a stool in the Solbar Lounge and watch the Warriors, Giants or 49ers play as you dine on Hawaiian ahi tuna poke, braised carnitas tacos or fresh oysters.
  • Don’t be deterred from dining alfresco if it’s chilly. Grab a table next to the patio’s linear fireplace or simply drape a toasty house-provided blanket across your shoulders.

The Food

  • During a Solbar meal, the freshest local, seasonal ingredients are put to creative use in ever-changing dishes that reflect the synergy of both wellness and indulgence that defines the Solage experience.
  • Breakfast choices appeal to both fitness gurus (egg white omelet with goat cheese and baby spinach) and vacation splurgers (cinnamon-sugar doughnut holes cooked to order). If you can’t decide, play it safe and select “what the chef would eat” (walnut oil sourdough batard, scrambled eggs and buffalo mozzarella.) Either way, be sure to order a bread basket from Model Bakery, a Napa favorite.
  • The dinner menu is divided into healthy, lighter dishes (which might include Monterey black cod or chilled minted sweet pea soup) to nourish body and soul, and hearty cuisine (Mishima Wagyu New York strip and a seared Sakura pork chop have been past selections) to comfort.
  • For a true culinary adventure, put yourself in the hands of the Calistoga restaurant’s talented toque and order his Chef’s Tasting. Let the chef lead you on a fish-, lamb- or vegetable-centric journey.
  • Kids are welcome at Solbar and receive their own “Sol Generation” menu offering favorites like soft tortillas filled with chicken, cheese, lettuce and mild salsa.

The Design

  • While the expansive patio allows for year-round alfresco dining with views for days, don’t eschew the modern and refined dining room — a barn-shaped structure with a rustic-chic vibe and a cozy fireplace.
  • The dining room features equal parts curved banquette seating and traditional dining chairs in varied hues of blue and gray.
  • An essential element is transformed into art: eight large lighting orbs — each dramatically fashioned from twigs and hanging from the high-pitched ceiling — cast a golden glow.
