Armani/Ristorante New York

Haute couture meets haute cuisine
VERIFIED LUXURY
Armani, ever on trend, has opened Armani/Ristorante New York, joining stylish Madison Avenue neighbors Louis Vuitton (its first Le Café in the U.S.) and Ralph Lauren (the long-standing Polo Bar). This latest epicurean effort is far from Armani’s first foray into hospitality. But unlike its numerous other establishments around the globe, this outpost is rendered in New York scale and size. Besides a restaurant, the 97,000-square-foot flagship building includes retail and residences.

Impressively, the 40-seat restaurant marries style with substance. The interior is impeccably outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, mirrored surfaces and seductive pops of green lacquer. Executive chef Daniele Castellano has designed an Italian menu with modern twists, such as a gorgeously plated scallop carpaccio accented with edible marigold or an unforgettable sea urchin linguine.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • A five-seat champagne bar, situated behind oversized windows overlooking Manhattan shoppers, greets diners as they enter the space while simultaneously setting a suitably chic tone for the dining experience.
  • The dining room's decor is as elegant as you would expect from such a refined brand. Cool gray chairs and booths surround immaculate tablecloths, while striking green lacquer accents and glinting mirrored walls add a sense of drama to the space.
  • Personal details — objets d'art are from Giorgio Armani’s travels and the pasta recipe comes right from his own kitchen — lend a warm, familial ambiance to the establishment.
  • The cocktail menu features creative concoctions. The Antarctic Martini is crafted with Chopin Family Reserve vodka, chilled to -40 degrees Fahrenheit and finished with a drop of Sicilian olive oil. The striking blue Negroni, with blue butterfly tea-infused gin, is as eye-catching as it is delicious.
  • Chef Castellano boasts an impressive resumé that includes posts at Jean-Georges at The Connaught in London, Four Seasons Hotel Milan and Nobu Armani in Milan.

The Food

  • The NYC restaurant offers a set-price menu of two, three or four courses for lunch; however, dinner is an à la carte affair.
  • The bread service is among the best in the city, with a steaming loaf of sourdough, razor-thin breadsticks and addictive cheese crisps.
  • Pasta and risotto are the stars of the menu. The braised lamb ravioli, lobster tagliolini and 24-month-old Parmigiano risotto are all can’t-miss courses. In a toast to decadence, black truffle can be added upon request.
  • Other standout dishes include the signature Maine lobster with citrus bisque appetizer, the hearty veal Milanese and the steak tartare with saffron and bone marrow.
  • Desserts like wild strawberries topped with pillowy meringue and a zesty lemon soufflé skew light, resulting in a delicate ending to an elegant dining experience.
