The Health Club at One Aldwych

An atmospheric London escape
The Health Club at One Aldwych sets the mood for pampering. It happens in the three treatment rooms, whose gray-silk-paneled walls light up with purple as music from Swan Lake plays in the background. And it happens in the subterranean pool, where mood lighting in vibrant colors like blue make the water glow (to hear music here, you have to go underwater). When you’re finally ready for pampering, try the Floral Massage Ritual, a signature treatment that uses Chinese and Indian techniques.
Our Inspector's Highlights
• The best design feature is the beautiful 59-foot-long, chlorine-free pool with strong mood lighting and a big screen that shows everything from clouds to underwater scenes.

• The Health Club offers a small, bright waiting area. Lime and maroon pillows sit on a cornflower-blue sofa, and across the way, two minimalistic silver chairs have round yellow seats.

• There’s never a threat of feeling parched, as the the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star spa keeps pitchers of water — plain, cucumber and orange-lemon — in supply on the table in the waiting room.

• Like the rest of One Aldwych hotel, the London spa features contemporary art; a white wall holds a large work that shows people laying out on a beach in the top portion, while gold, white and blue stripes cover the bottom half of it.
Things to Know
• Appointments to this popular spa can be made over the phone or via email.

• A swimsuit is required if you want to spend time in the coed eucalyptus steam room and cedar sauna, plus, you won’t want to miss the chance to swim in the stunning 59-foot-long pool that’s illuminated thanks to the mood lighting.

• To find the wet areas of The Health Club at One Aldwych, take the stairs in the locker room down one flight.
The Treatments
• La Alternativa Smooth is a 75-minute facial claiming to be a needle-free alternative to Botox. It smoothes out wrinkles and lines using products from Barcelona beauty company Natura Bissé.

• If you’re a fan of hot-stone massages, try the volcanic stone treatment. It uses hot and cold mineral stones to rub away your tension.

• A signature of the intimate spa, the floral massage ritual massage adopts traditional Chinese medicine and ayurvedic principles. Expect to be pampered for 90 minutes.

• Give your thirsty skin some relief with the Citrus Drench. This citrusy body wrap hydrates your skin and then shields it from premature aging.

• After a long, packed flight, squeeze in time for a back, neck and shoulder massage before you hit the town. It will unfurl the knots from your back, neck and shoulders so you can relax and enjoy your vacation.
The Facilities
• The London spa’s small locker room is lined with light wood lockers. A black padded bench sits in front.

• There’s a shower with slate-granite tile and dispensers of shampoo and conditioner. A dark dual-sink area has mirrors covering the wall, and a purple orchid sits in a silver square vase.

• Silver dispensers give out facial cleanser, toner and lotion, and spray-on deodorant and cotton swabs are offered.

• There’s also a machine that will speed up drying time on your wet swimsuit, in case you decide to take a dip in pool.

• Across from the pool, there’s a eucalyptus steam room and cedar sauna.
