Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection

A thoughtful Mayan-inspired retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
The first hotel to be inaugurated in the exclusive new Kanai development of the Riviera Maya, Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection is both a tribute to the region’s Mayan heritage. The architecture features three- to four-level towers crafted from regional stone and wood, all set on an elevated platform above the mangroves. With every room facing the sea, the lodgings feel private and immersive, designed with thoughtful details that reflect a sense of place. Guests need only arrive — the meticulously appointed spaces ensure effortless comfort, inviting them to return time and again.

The experience begins at the entrance, where a shaman guides you in setting an intention for you stay. Each room key is tied to one of the hotel’s three core values — past, present or future — encouraging mindfulness throughout the visit. From there, the property unfolds seamlessly on foot; there’s no need for golf carts or bikes, as everything — the beach club, pools, restaurants, entertainment areas and a charming pier — is within a short walk.

At the heart of the double-winged layout, a small coffee cart stands as a small reminder of Etéreo’s devotion to craftsmanship, transforming even the simplest rituals into moments of care and connection.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The hotel’s 75 rooms are housed within eight towers, split between two wings. Accommodations include studios (even the smallest have ample space), suites and expansive penthouses, including four two-story residences. While layouts vary, every room features floor-to-ceiling windows, freestanding bathtubs, a curated selection of amenities, a traditional Mexican artisanal botica box in place of a minibar and bespoke design.
  • Choose from a variety of dining options, including Itzam, a Mexican-inspired restaurant centered around a traditional comal (or griddle) at the entrance, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Che Che, an open-air venue, blends Japanese and Mexican influences, offering the freshest seafood-driven dishes. For a toes-in-the-sand experience, El Changarro turns out ceviches and light bites right by the sea.
  • The Kanai hotel provides a variety of lovely private and multi-functional spaces, including Resol, an open-air garden hosting everything from cookouts to intimate "grandma dinners" (menus featuring the chefs’ favorite recipes from their grandmothers). You can also enjoy a secluded seating dock at Itzam, a sunrise platform for private dinners, and daily sunrise and sunset ceremonies led by the in-house shaman. With beach palapas and tailored experiences, the hotel adapts seamlessly to each guest’s desires.
  • Mayan traditions and natural wonders like local cenotes inspire SANA, an Auberge Spa’s range of healing and revitalizing treatments. Complementing the spa is a movement center with Technogym equipment and private training sessions, as well as a yoga and sound healing shala for holistic wellness.
  • The pool areas have a cascading layout, featuring both family-friendly and adult-only spaces with various lounge options and palapas. The beach club operates on a first-come, first-served basis, offering shaded palapas and non-motorized water sports like snorkeling. Protected by Cozumel Island, the pristine shoreline boasts calm, inviting waters.

Things to Know

  • Located in the Kanai development, the luxury hotel shares its exclusive reserve with just two other properties. This ecologically protected area follows strict building regulations and operates its own water-cleansing plant. With a private stretch of coastline, it feels like a secluded world apart from the rest of the Riviera Maya.
  • The attention to detail at Etéreo is exceptional, with renowned Mexican artist Manuel Felguérez designing the logo — a motif subtly etched into wood panels throughout the rooms. The interiors combine leather, wood and regional textiles, drawing inspiration from local craftsmanship without feeling cliché. Each space feels like a thoughtfully designed boutique home rather than a traditional hotel room.
  • Etéreo is just 40 minutes from Cancun International Airport.
  • Guests receive an “itinerary designer” before arrival and a guide during their stay, available through a messaging system, to assist with all concierge needs. The property curates a dynamic calendar of activities, supporting local artists and entrepreneurs while subtly introducing guests to the region’s culture.
  • Onsite store La Chula features Mexican designers’ pieces, including fashion, jewelry and other items to wear during your stay or take home as a souvenir of your time here.
