If you want to be in the center of the action without sacrificing the restful luxury of a beachside escape, The Huntley Hotel offers the best of all worlds. The Santa Monica hotel sits in the heart of the city’s shopping, dining and culture district. Yet, it’s conveniently one block from the beach. Stepping off of the sidewalk and into the lobby is like walking through a secret door and entering an exotic oasis, furnished with hand-carved stools and chairs sourced from Africa, Brazil and beyond. Plus, the space is scented by The Huntley’s signature jasmine candle. With modern interiors designed by Thomas Schoos (who also did distinctive designs for Tao in Las Vegas and Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey’s Herringbone restaurant in La Jolla), the 18-story building houses 204 spacious, contemporary guest rooms and five unique rooms for intimate gatherings, private dining and business meetings.
Our Inspector's Highlights
o Perched at the top, The Penthouse restaurant is the real showstopper with its wall-to-wall windows and 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Malibu Mountains and Los Angeles cityscape.

o All the technological amenities — from high-speed wireless Internet to 42-inch plasma TVs to the hi-fi audio system in the Presidential Suite — allow you to stay connected.
Things to Know
o The hotel doesn’t have a pool, but its proximity to the shore makes up for it.

o Santa Monica’s year-round temperate Southern California climate makes The Huntley Hotel an alluring stay. During the city’s peak season — July, August and early September — sun seekers can head to the beach with a lunch packed by the in-room dining team and beach towels from the front desk.

o Summer in the city does bring crowds of tourists on the bustling streets outside the hotel. On weekends, The Penthouse restaurant and lounge draws chic, attractive locals to its Sunday brunch, where they can also listen to music and enjoy 360-degree panoramas while noshing on a black truffle omelet — so the Santa Monica hotel can be a bit of a scene.
The Rooms
o The interiors of The Huntley Hotel’s spacious rooms nod to Santa Monica’s laid-back beach culture. Light woods, pristine white sheets, colored glass table lamps and a natural paint palette call to mind surfboards, driftwood, sea glass and the elements outside.

o Plush, custom pillow-top Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are outfitted in cool and comfortable linens by Matteo Los Angeles, a local purveyor of luxury handcrafted home wares. Even if you’re not tucked between these sheets, you will feel pampered wearing the Frette bathrobes and slippers, available in each room.

o One-third of The Huntley’s 204 contemporary guest rooms have ocean views, with the best vistas available in the Premier Rooms on floors nine to 17. The rooms on the third to eighth floors boast vistas of either Los Angeles or Santa Monica.

o Room service menus are carefully crafted upstairs at The Penthouse by executive chef Seth Greenberg to ensure you can savor the same farm-to-table cuisine available in the main dining room.
The Look
o German-born designer Thomas Schoos redesigned the 18-story Huntley Hotel in 2007 to create a new standard of luxury beach hotel. Decked with leather daybeds, carved African chairs, mango wood stools, Mongolian wool pillows and other furnishings sourced from all over the world, the lobby is a study in texture and light.

o A wall of white lacquered piranhas makes the big impression that this is a beach retreat. The layering of natural materials keeps the space laid-back and inviting.

o The Santa Monica hotel’s 204 large, light-filled guest rooms are well appointed, featuring plush beds and fresh, contemporary design.

o Clever design and good flow emerge as the best features of the guest rooms at the Santa Monica hotel. Sleek reading nooks and window seats are covered in bright, modern upholstery, adding more lounging options in the often-open floor plan.
