One UN New York

An East Side Manhattan hotel with a view
Sponsored page. This property is not Star Rated.
This 40-story, two-tower hotel in Midtown East offers a unique vantage point with spectacular views of the East River, Brooklyn and, given that it is directly across the street from the United Nations headquarters, one of the only clear glimpses of this grand institution. Plus, it’s conveniently located within walking distance from Grand Central and shopping next to the Empire State Building in Herald Square. The hotel has all the perks of staying central in Times Square, but without the chaos, and is a great place to take kids.

While the view and location prove excellent reasons to visit, the 439 rooms are also worth checking out. Once upon a time, the building housed apartments, so each room, from the two-bedroom suites to the deluxe habitations, all remain distinctive, and with more space than your average New York hotel accommodation.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • You can easily find the 40-story One UN New York building if you head to the UN at 44th and First Avenue in Midtown East. The grand hotel’s window façade gleams in the morning light as it towers across the street from this government institution.
  • This hotel is good for staying fit on your visit as it offers a gym with glass walls that look out toward the river, a pool, an indoor tennis court and there is a public running path right outside the door.
  • Originally designed by Kevin Roche in 1976, One UN New York flaunted the disco-era-inspired style that was so popular at the time but One UN has undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation to bring it into the modern era.
  • One new addition to the New York City hotel is the Skyline Club, a public area planned by French designer Didier Gomez that features floor-to-ceiling windows and a cozy, warm interior, not unlike a clubhouse.
Things to Know
  • There is only one time when you shouldn’t try to visit One UN New York and that’s during the two weeks when the UN holds its annual General Assembly. During this period, the hotel checks all its rooms out to the delegates from various countries, both as a courtesy to the UN and to help regulate safety measures.
  • Otherwise, you can visit the Midtown hotel in the fall, spring, summer and winter, though if you plan on walking around to the various sites, summer and fall are the best times.
  • Of course, the winter holidays are also a beautiful occasion to check out the city, and from your 30-story-plus room, you can see festive lights stretching all across Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The Rooms
  • Among the basic accommodations, choose the Superior Rooms, which are located in the East Tower and have a workspace, coffee maker and a 40-inch HDTV.
  • In the West Tower, the more luxurious of the two, Deluxe Rooms come complete with leather-bound desks, an espresso machine and toiletries by Shanghai Tang.
  • You can also check out a one- or two-bedroom suite, each with a living room, an additional bathroom, and touch-screen operated light and heating panels.
  • The 129 rooms in the West Tower also have high-speed, free Wi-Fi and access to the Skyline Club, a cozy space good for meetings, grabbing a coffee or soda any time, and relaxing with a glass of wine and snacks during the complimentary happy hour.
  • Since all the rooms start on the 28th floor, each one has a great view, no matter which direction you are looking. However, if you want the best vantage point possible, request a room on a corner for a stunning skyline vista on each side.
The Restaurants
  • The only all-day restaurant option at One UN New York is from its tiny take-out café located right by the lobby.
  • Simply called Coffee Bar, it makes the food fresh or has it brought daily from nearby purveyors. You can grab a cup of Illy coffee, a crisp salad, a gourmet sandwich, a bagel, a delicate tart and various pastries and enjoy them in the Ambassador Lounge across from the shop.
  • The Ambassador Grill offers delicious Asian cuisine, ranging from king salmon with soy ginger sauce to grilled rib eye.
  • The Skyline Club serves continental breakfast, refreshments, and an evening reception to guests.
