Baton Rouge

Louisiana’s capital city is a modern metropolis with more than a few Old South influences. Sitting on the southeast portion of the Mississippi River, this port city is a dynamic mix of tradition and commerce. It is defined by the twin campuses of Louisiana State University and Southern University, and the high-rise State Capitol building, which has an observation deck with sweeping views of the city and surrounding countryside. Visitors to Baton Rogue will find interesting historical museums, great down-home Cajun and Creole restaurants, riverboat gambling and nature centers celebrating the area’s cypress swamps and wildlife. Many Baton Rogue attractions are concentrated in the city’s downtown district, while others are sprinkled throughout outlying areas. A major must-see? The chain of the restored plantation homes that stand along the mighty Mississippi.
